Resting Easy: Mattresses Make a Difference in Complex Comp Care
-by Zack Craft
Mattress selection is an aspect of complex medical care that few workers' compensation payers - or providers, for that matter - take seriously enough.
Rehab mattresses provide positioning, support, comfort, and protection against wounds. Their pressure controls, inflation/deflation rates, rotation, bellow designs and materials (foam, gel, layered foam, sand, fluid, and combinations of these) are the details that make the difference.
There are hundreds of rehabilitative mattresses on the market, all addressing specific issues. However, most workers' compensation mattress scripts are limited to a couple of manufacturers and models. This is partly due to physicians' familiarity only with brands used in hospitals and partly to durable medical equipment (DME) companies' limited access to manufacturers and distributors.
With long-term disability claims comprising more than 11 percent of the workers' compensation medical dollar, mattresses are important cost considerations.

Statistics show TMS discharges wound VAC's faster than other providers
KCI, the leader in wound V.A.C. technology, has provided their wound vac statistics and TMS is still the leader!
From January 2009 to December 2009, TMS was able to discharge Wound VAC's in the first 30 days more often than ALL other Work Comp providers combined! This equals REAL savings for the client since it costs $129/day plus supplies and nursing. A wound VAC is an expensive piece of equipment that helps promote wound healing. The sooner the wound heals, the faster the wound vac can be discharged and the lower the cost for the insurance carrier. TMS claimants are able to heal in the first 30 days more often than ALL other workers' comp providers, according to KCI's statistics. How do we do it? TMS sends only certified wound care nurses and/or EXPERIENCED wound VAC nurses. TMS starts wound VAC services within 24 hours. TMS' cases are less likely to have a lapse in care/services due to our close oversight and constant communication with all parties involved. To learn more about wound VAC's, click here. TMS claimants, on average, are on wound vac's a shorter time than all other workers' comp providers which equals BIG SAVINGS for the carrier. |
