Obesity / Bariatrics: The New Co-Morbidity, Managing Complex Medical Claims Issues

Kevin Glennon, Director of Clinical Services at Total Medical Solutions, will be one of six panel members that will be presenting a two hour educational session on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 at the 63rd Workers' Compensation Conference at the Orlando World Center.

The program titled "Obesity-The New Co-Morbidity, Managing Compex Medical Claim Issues" will focus on the current epidemic of obesity in our society today and how it is effecting not only medical costs across the nation, but how it is affecting our workers' compensation claims.

The most recent statistics, released by the CDC last month, reported that more than one quarter of all Americans are now obese (24.6%). Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee had the worst rates with 30%. Colorado has the slimmest population with 18.7%. Further data released by the CDC indicates that Southerners are the heaviest Americans, on average, with 27% obese. Just over 25% of adults in the Midwest, 23% in the Northeast, and 22% in the West were obese.

On a more promising note, the CDC reported that the childhood obesity epidemic had leveled off after surging for about 20 years, with only 16% of young people being obese.
