Sutton Associates News Bulletin
Greetings!
The
deadline requiring certain federal contractors and subcontractors to use
E-Verify is scheduled to go into effect on May 21, 2009. The rule
will affect those awarded a new federal contract (if the contract includes the Federal
Acquisition Regulation (FAR) E-Verify clause) after May 21st.
All organizations should be aware of
E-Verify, however. This bulletin will explain what it is, its benefits, and how to register.
Additionally, you will find links to resources, such as "Frequently Asked
Questions" and "E-Verify Employer Dos and Don'ts".

E-Verify Rule will be Effective May 21, 2009
What is E-Verify?
The
Department of Homeland Security (DHS), along with the Social Security
Administration (SSA), operates the Internet-based E-Verify system, while the
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) oversees the program. The
system allows participating employers, or their "Third Party Agents", to
quickly compare employee information taken from the Form I-9 against more than
425 million records in SSA's database and more than 60 million records in DHS's
immigration databases.
Why use E-Verify?
According
to the USCIS, E-Verify "is the best means available for determining employment
eligibility of new hires and the validity of their Social Security Numbers." Another
benefit - results are returned within seconds.
Additionally,
a photo screening tool can be utilized to compare photos on Employment
Authorization Documents (EAD) or Permanent Resident Cards (green cards) against
images stored in the USCIS databases to help identify counterfeit documents.
How do you
register?
You
don't have to. You can use a Third Party Agent to manage the process for you.
However, if you want to register, click here to get started. At the end of the registration process, you or an authorized
signatory authority will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) that provides the terms of agreement between you the employer, the SSA,
and USCIS.
Resources
For
those other than the federal contractors and subcontractors referenced above,
the E-Verify program is completely voluntary and, once registered, you can
cancel at any time.
