Seeking Truth in Security
January 2008
Greetings!

I can't count how many times I've called customer service for one reason or another, only to be put on hold for what seems like an eternity.  When I finally get a live person, I inevitably speak with somebody who does not know how to help me.  If I'm lucky, they will find someone who does.  More often than not, I'm left on hold, or worse, disconnected as I'm shuffled from one agent to another.

Proper training of these representatives could reduce hold times and increase customer satisfaction.  Fortunately, the issue that I am trying to resolve is usually a minor one in the grand scheme of things.  A poorly trained guard force, on the other hand, may have dire consequences.  This month, we'll take a closer look at the characteristics of a vendor's training program and what to look for when selecting a security guard company.

Guard Vendor Training Programs

Quantity vs. Quality

The quality of the training program is just as, or more, important than the amount of hours a security guard company trains its guard force.  When comparing training programs, you should ask where the training information is developed and by whom.  It's also important to find out who conducts the training.  For example, is the training conducted solely by salaried management with applicable experience, or is it an informal program conducted by hourly employees?  Other things to consider are where the training is conducted, how big the classes are, how the grading and documentation system works, and how deficiencies are addressed and resolved.

Initial vs. Ongoing

There are two major components of a guard company's training program.  The first is the initial and on-the-job training provided to new employees prior to assuming a post.  The second, more often overlooked component, is the continuous training provided to existing guards.

Details about ongoing training will help differentiate one vendor's program from another.  Is there a formal program in place?  What is the frequency of the training?  How is the training conducted?  How are the training topics selected?  These are just a few questions that can be asked to differentiate each vendor's training program.

A well trained guard force

The importance of a well trained guard force cannot be overstated.  It is imperative that guards know the facility and the procedures that are in place to prevent and/or quickly respond to a serious situation.  Where seconds can literally mean the difference between life and death, a first-class training program can reduce response time and the likelihood of mistakes.

Payroll

Pay rates and benefits are associated with every bill rate.  Determine the value of these rates and include them in your contract if they are not already included.  Here are a few things to ask your vendor or to look for in proposals:

1.  What is the pay rate associated with each bill rate?

2.  What are the benefits associated with each bill rate?

3.  How do overtime and holidays affect pay and bill rates?
