What's This Sign? New Pedestrian Safety Program in Downtown Fuquay-Varina
This sign will become a familiar one if you drive in downtown Fuquay-Varina. The "State Law: Yield to Pedestrians within Crosswalk" sign is part of a pedestrian safety campaign being jointly undertaken by the Town of Fuquay-Varina and the Fuquay-Varina Revitalization Association. A total of four signs have been placed this past week into crosswalks in the historic districts with two each on both Broad and on Main Streets. The signs remind us that both motorists and pedestrians have rights and responsibilities to ensure safe passage on our roadways.
Under North Carolina law, a driver must yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing a highway within any clearly marked crosswalk. Pedestrians, however, must act responsibly. It is the duty of pedestrians to look before starting across a highway, and to exercise reasonable care for their own safety. It's always a good idea for pedestrians to make eye-contact a driver before stepping off the curb and never run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.
With town traffic bustling, it has become increasingly more difficult for pedestrians to cross Broad and Main Streets, especially during lunch-hour, rush hour and on Saturday afternoons - all high traffic times and all key shopping times. According to a study performed by the Fuquay-Varina Revitalization Association, merchants in the historic area are enthusiastic about the placement of the pedestrian crosswalk signs. Lorraine Dotson, owner of Fuquay Sports Shop located at 501 Broad Street noticed a big difference when a test sign was put out on Broad Street during the holiday season. According to Dotson, "There's a lot to look at as you come through downtown and the sign really draws your attention to the crosswalk and helps remind you to stop."
To check out a comprehensive list of pedestrian laws in North Carolina, go to http://www.ncdot.org/transit/bicycle/laws/laws_pedlaws.html. If you have comments or questions about the new pedestrian signs in downtown Fuquay-Varina, please contact Susan Weis at 552-0848 or susanweisfvra@yahoo.com.

On Saturday, January 30th (that's this Saturday!) Stick Boy will be turning two years old. Please join us at the bakery on Saturday for a FREE cup of coffee, FREE cookie, and a slice of cake. It's our way of saying "thank you" for all of your encouragement, prayers, ideas, and patronage. See you Saturday!
On a different note, Wake County has implemented a 1% Prepared Food & Beverage Tax. This is not part of the N.C. State Sales Tax, but is in addition to the N.C. State Sales Tax. We must begin to collect the tax immediately. On Monday, we will begin collecting 8.75% combined tax. That means that all of our exact change customers will need to memorize a new price:( -Katie
Bread of the Week: Garlic Cheddar Our Garlic Cheddar Bread is full of flavor. The blend of sharp cheddar cheese and fresh chopped garlic perfectly compliment any pasta dish. I love to cut mine into thick hearty slices and serve it with spaghetti or lasagna. Of course, you can always eat it right out of the bag. Here's what one happy customer had to say, "Hey Katie, I am eating your garlic cheddar bread right out of the bag and it is so delicious!!" Stop in and pick up a loaf today. We guarantee you'll love it!
Garlic Cheddar Bread is normally available on Tuesdays and Fridays for $3.79 but will be available every day this week for $3.25.
As always, we mix our breads from scratch, shape them by hand, and bake them in our big German oven right here on Main Street. We bake with only unbleached and unbromated flour and never use any additives or preservatives. Come and taste!
Treat of the Week: Pumpkin Walnut Bread Our Pumpkin Walnut Bread is our most famous sweet bread. It has an unbeatable taste and is super moist. Pumpkin Walnut is a perfect bread to give as a gift, enjoy for breakfast, or have as a snack. Our Baker's Choice Breads Monday- Apricot Brioche Oh my! Our Apricot Brioche will actually melt in your mouth. It's loaded with sweet cream butter, fresh eggs, granulated sugar, whole milk, and dried Turkish apricots. The "crumb" (the inside of the bread) is light and golden with a texture like velvet. Apricot Brioche makes delicious toast (no butter needed) and tea sandwiches. This melt-in-your-mouth bread will be available on Monday for $5.50/loaf. Call now and place your order!
Wednesday- Sweet Potato Marshmallow Brioche Our Sweet Potato Marshmallow Brioche is a decadent Fall treat. This fluffy French breakfast bread is made with oven-roasted sweet potato, white chocolate chips, and marshmallows. Sound good? It is. In fact, it's so good that I've planned an entire meal around it: French Toast made with Sweet Potato Marshmallow Brioche, Applewood Smoked Bacon, and a fresh fruit salad. I can't wait! This wonderful new bread will be available on Wednesday for $5.50/loaf. Call now and place your order

********************************************************************************************** Upcoming Events! Friday Tasting Justin will be back in the store Friday January 29th 5:30-8PM tasting some spectacular wines from Bennert Lanes as always our tastings are free, zilch, nada did I say free already! Bennet Lane Winery Follow Napa Valley's Route 29 north to Calistoga, and then keep going just 2 1/2 more miles. You'll arrive at the pinnacle of the Napa Valley - the northernmost wedge where the Vaca mountain range meets the Mayacamas range. Here you will also find Bennett Lane Winery, sitting snugly at the edge of its own well-maintained Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard.Owners Randy and Lisa Lynch purchased the property only five and a half years ago, but Bennett Lane is already making a splash in wine country with its lush textured Cabernet Sauvignon and a no-nonsense red wine varietal blend called Maximus, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The winery has garnered an incredible thirteen 90+ Point Scores from Wine Spectator in four short years. We will have several of these big daddys open friday. The Maximus and the Turn 4 both rock and will be open! We will also have some live Jazz and our glass specials ! As always you are free to bring your own snacks and we are still waiving our normal corkage fee!
Saturday Tasting Alex from Grapevine will be in the store Saturday January 30th tasting some spectacular wines from the Rhone Valley. Heres the short scoop on the Rhone Valley The Rhone Valley, by its very nature, has always been the ideal route between the Mediterranean and northern Europe and the Atlantic. The Ancient Greeks used the Rhone to travel into the heart of Gaul to carry out trade. Wine production continued apace with the arrival of the Romans in 125 BC. In the 14th century, the Avignon Popes were supplied by the local wine producers. John XXII, the second of the seven Popes to be based in Avignon, had a castle built at Chateauneuf du Pape. The 17th and 18th centuries saw rapid progress in Rhone Valley wine production. In the 17th century, Cotes Du Rhone was the name of an administrative district in the Vicariate of UZAS (Gard. Regulations were introduced in 1650 to guarantee their origin and their quality. By order of the King in 1737, all the casks that were to be used for carriage and sale had to be branded with the letters "C.D.R.".Then came the ultimate recognition, with the creation in 1937 of an AOC - Appellation d'Origine Control. An A.O.C. classification is the acknowledgement both of a contemporary reality and a tradition that is comprised of a number of key elements: one or more varieties of vine, a clearly defined territory and superb expertise in wine production. The rules that guarantee the quality of AOC products are laid down by a national body, the I.N.A.O. Come by try some CDR's the 2007 vintage is phenomenal!
