Avalon Springs is 1st Place Winner in 2009 Downtown Chili Cook-off |

The citizens of Fuquay-Varina experienced a real taste treat on Saturday, October 31st at the 7th annual Downtown Chili Cook-off where more than 450 people tasted chili and voted for their favorite cook. This year, eleven teams vied for the coveted title of Fuquay-Varina's Best Chili. Originally 13 were slated to compete, but two dropped out due to illness.
 The $500 First Place Winner was Avalon Springs sponsored by Homes by Dickerson. Jenn Nowalk, a company representative said that they will donate their first prize winnings to Triangles Spokes an organization that purchases bikes for kid's in need. Trevor Thompson won second place with his entry and third place went to Joy Medlin with Frightfully Good. Second Place and Third Place winners receive $300 and $150 respectively. The Best Presentation Honor went to Pat Stanley and Porky Pat's Chili.
The Chili Cook-off is organized by the Fuquay-Varina Revitalization Association. Gold sponsors include Senter, Stephenson & Johnson, P.A., H H & H Mini Storage, The Young Group of Fuquay, An Insurance Agency Built on Relationships, andBuilders Mutual Insurance Company,Where Builders Come First, and Silver Sponsor the N.C. Beef Council. The Downtown Chili Cook-off is part of the Day in Downtown.

The Elf has arrived and he is going fast. The Elf on the Shelf is a wonderful tradition to start if you haven't already. We had a very good meeting in October with a video and discussion. At our next meeting we will have a 31 minute video titled "Money History in Your Hands". It is a good video that we should all find interesting with a discussion to follow. Be sure to bring any coins, currency or tokens that you wish to show or have questions about. We will have a door prize drawing as usual and gifts for our junior attendees as well. Our December 8th meeting will be at Golden Corral in Fuquay-Varina where we will all meet and eat. All are welcome to attend. Don't forget the Coin Show at the State Fairgrounds the 14th and 15th of November.

Our Fuquay-Varina Arts Council is building a Board and needs people who have an interest in helping to shape the growth of Art in our area.If you have an interest in; a position on our Board of Directors, to participate in an event planning committee or just learn more about what we are planning, please attend this meeting.
At this meeting, we hope to assign a committee to get our fundraiser "Photos with Santa" planned and going. We scrambled to start this last year and with little exposure and less marketing, we still raised around $1,000. It can be much better and more organized this year.
Additionally, we plan to set a monthly music series with 6 events from January to June. We contemplate 3 indoors and 3 outside. There is much work required to pull this off and then keep the momentum to build a strong and active organization.
All facets of building this into an important organization in our town are wide open and we need your involvement.

Thanks for coming to downtown Fuquay-Varina this past weekend! Three big events in one week is a lot for a small town, but you'all proved that we can handle it!
More than 3500 people came to downtown for the Brass Nickel Tour, about 1000 kids and parents attended Trick or Treat in Downtown and approximately 10,000 people came to a Day in Downtown. Thanks to the many volunteers that make these events happen and thanks to your for your interest in downtown!
