Judd Parkway Extension Groundbreaking - Wednesday, July 1 at 10 am

The Town of Fuquay-Varina is extending an invitation for all citizens to attend the groundbreaking of the Judd Parkway extension.  Judd Parkway, when finished, will be a tremendous benefit to Fuquay-Varina.  Please come out and show your support for this important project. Please meet at Judd Parkway and Jighway 55 near the Food Lion at 10:00 am.
Old Fashioned Family Fourth Planned at Fuquay Mineral Spring Park
The Fourth of July was historically the time when all the family gathered at the Fuquay Mineral Spring. Our Family Fourth of July Centennial Celebration has been planned to be reminiscent of that earlier time. Families are invited to bring their children and grand children.

Children and all the young in spirit are invited to arrive at 1:30 p.m. Gather in the parking lot at the corner of Vance and Spring Avenue. Patti Byrne and Debbie Semple will direct the "old timey parade" line up. Led by David Klinger and the boy scouts, the parade will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m. and move down Spring Avenue, turn on Spring Street and end at the reviewing stand across from the mineral spring. All costumes should be "patriotic," again exactly as remembered in the past. From the stroller to the bicycle, from stilts to skates, be sure everything is "red, white, and blue.!" Pets or motorized vehicles are not allowed.

Following the parade and the opening ceremonies, children of every age will be directed in games from the past. Maybe you were good at horseshoes, marbles, jack rocks, hopscotch, hoop rolling and more! Older "kids" can show their style and younger children will be introduced to a past long gone. These will take place in the area bounded by Spring Street, Spring Avenue and Reynolds Drive.

Bring you lawn chairs or blankets (or both) and stake out a spot in the park to enjoy the entertainment . Between 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. you will be treated to a variety of groups, ending with the Senior Singers of the FVBC who will provide patriotic music at 4:00 p.m. Lemonade and ice cream, the two popular refreshments from the past, will be available!

Hotdogs and cookies will be served at 5:00 p.m. . Families should retire to their quilts and chairs as the Gerald Parker Jazz Band takes the stage. Dancing will be in the street, as the old pavilion no longer exists.

The Family Fourth will wind down at 7:00 p.m. and give you time to continue the holiday visiting relatives or entertaining at home. The only major difference from the past will be our modern attire. Please, no long dresses, suits, umbrellas or gloves. Let this be a memorable experience for young families and a remembrance from the past for the grandparents.

**The Town of Fuquay-Varina will have their regular Fourth of July fireworks on Friday, July 3rd at South Park!  The event described above is IN ADDITION to the fireworks!**  See article above this one!
Stephen's Hardware Awarded SHARP Recognition Award for Safety

Stephen's Hardware, located at 405 Broad Street, was awarded the SHARP award by the North Carolina Department of Labor on June 24, 2009 in a ceremony at their business.  The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small employers who operate an exemplary safety and health management system. Acceptance into SHARP by OSHA is an achievement of status that singles out businesses among their peers as a model for worksite safety and health. Upon receiving SHARP recognition, worksites are exempt from programmed inspections during the period in which the SHARP certification is valid.

The SHARP award truly sets Stephens Hardware apart from other small businesses.  Out of the 260,000 small businesses eligible to apply for the SHARP award, only 80 businesses are awarded this honor in North Carolina.  Congratulations to Stephens for being a community leader in safety, a great business for our town and a hometown hero in so many other ways!

Fundraising Event at Garden Hut to Benefit Marie Neal on July 11
The Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) BENEFIT FOR MARIE NEAL is at the Garden Hut on Saturday, July 11 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The fundraising event begins with Carol Stein's Gardeners Forum, "Getting Back to Our Roots".  Learn to plant an old timey late summer veggie garden.  Free, but registration is requested.

Enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social after the Forum, beginning at 12 noon.  A raffle will be held and there will be a dunking booth and other family fun such as water gun games and a daylily toss.  A $10 donation per person is requested; additional donations are greatly appreciated.  Checks should be made payable to COTA with "Marie Neal" on the memo line.  Dunking booth and game tickets are cash only.  All proceeds will go to COTA and are tax deductible.

The Neal family's 16 year old daughter Marie has alpha-1-antitypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder, and needs a liver transplant.  She is on the donor list, waiting.  Her father Joe works for N.C. State University in the Horticultural Science Department, and her mom Brenda is a former employee with 5 years of service with the Garden Hut.  Both have given much expertise to gardeners over the years.

Nelsa Cox, owner of the Garden Hut says, "Marie is a vibrant, mature young lady with excellent artistic abilities.  She is a swimmer with Athens Drive and an all American child who went from living the dream to having a serious illness with the drive and determination to get through it.  All she wants is the transplant so she can get on with her life.  I think it's important to the family, who are good people with many ties to Fuquay-Varina and the surrounding area.  Money cannot fix everything, but reaching your hand out and giving a hug, your time or a donation will help them know the love and support of this community.  For the five years that Brenda worked with us, she gave her expertise to each individual client who came to the Garden Hut.  I hope to get as many people involved and hope it will mean something to the people Brenda touched and they will want to give back.  Helping others, especially through critical times, is what makes the world go round."

The Garden Hut is located at 1004 Old Honeycutt Road in Fuquay-Varina.  For details see www.NelsasGardenHut.com or to register call (919) 552-0590.
