New Chaplaincy Resources Available on APC Web site

Two new tools to assist you in your chaplaincy are available on the APC Web site:
  • Mark LaRocca-Pitts authored FACT, a New Spiritual Screening Tool that he shares with APC members after introducing it in his hospital. FACT is available in both Spanish and English versions. On the Reading Room page, scroll down to Standards of Practice. Mark is the director of pastoral care at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, GA.
  • The Commission on Quality in Pastoral Services recently updated the Complementary Spiritual Practices in Professional Chaplaincy. This resource encourages chaplains to learn more about complementary pastoral resources, practices and interventions.

APC members are invited to submit additional practices they have found beneficial in their ministries. If you have undertaken a project or developed materials that have been well-received in your workplace, please share it with others using the Best Practice Submission Form on the APC Web site.

Response to Membership Survey Phenomenal
By Josephine N. Schrader CAE, IOM

Recently the APC board of directors invited members to participate in the comprehensive 2008 Membership Survey in which they were asked about their job duties, workplace trends and the value of the programs offered by APC.

Over 1,600 members participated in the survey, which gathered more than 15,000 written comments. The result is a wealth of insights, perspectives and voices to which the board is giving careful attention and consideration.

On behalf of the APC leadership, I thank all those who took a half hour out of their busy schedules to participate. The experiences, opinions and facts that you shared with the board will help shape APC's strategic plan for the next five years. The board will present a summary report of the survey findings to the membership in the coming months.

Annual Conference 2008 New MembersAnnual Fund Off to Great Start
By Bob Juozitis MDiv

The APC Annual Fund drive, which began last month, is off to a great start with a strong level of member participation.

APC thanks those who have already given their generous support to the association's mission of certifying and serving its membership, and promoting professional chaplaincy.

In addition to the APC membership, the Development Committee encourages individuals and groups outside the association to support the Annual Fund, and we ask members to spread the word. By working together, APC, its members and supporters can build the future of professional chaplaincy.

A Contribution and Pledge Form can be found on the APC Web site. Gifts may be spread out over 10 months to make payments easier.

Thank you for your continuous support.

Take the Photo Tour of 2008 Annual Conference
By Mary Kendrick Moore BCC

A frequent comment from members is, "One of the most important things about my membership in APC is my friendship with colleagues." And for many, these friendships began and continue at annual conferences. Every conference is filled with many memories - of fun events, the celebration of new members, the honoring of colleagues who receive annual awards, and the renewing of friendships.

In years past, annual conference photography filled the pages of The APC News, offering everyone the chance to get a taste of the events. The advent of the APC e-News is challenging me and others to consider new and creative ways to tell our stories. So, try this - enjoy the 2008 Annual Conference Memories slide show now posted on the APC Web site on the Past Conference Highlights Page and let us know what you think.

Spiritual Care Summit '09 Announces Plenary SpeakersSpiritual Care Collaborative
By Rita Kaufman CAE

The Spiritual Care Collaborative (SCC), host of Spiritual Care Summit '09 February 1-4, 2009 at Disney's Coronado Springs resort in Walt Disney World, FL, has announced an impressive lineup of plenary speakers. Be sure to attend this landmark event, which will bring together members of six pastoral care, counseling and education associations, and their colleagues from related disciplines.

Dr. Benjamin W. Corn MD, chairman of Radiation Oncology at Tel Aviv Medical Center-Ichilov Hospital in Israel, will present, "Seek and You Shall Find: Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries within the Village of Care." From his own experience as a cancer specialist, Dr. Corn will offer models of care that effectively overcome the obstacles that exist among physicians, patients, chaplains and others.

David Deane PhD, assistant professor of theology at Atlantic School of Theology in Nova Scotia, Canada, will discuss, "Imagining Well-Being: How our Perspectives Shape the Way We Care." With a firm belief that health should not be defined by consumer capitalism that promotes "survival of the fittest," Dean will invite attendees to explore how faith communities and traditions can participate in, and take responsibility for, the perception of what a "normal" healthy body and mind ought to be.

Ada-Maria Isasi-Diaz PhD, professor of ethics and theology at Drew University in Madison, NJ, and founder and co-director of Drew's Hispanic Institute of Theology, will present, "Embracing Diversity and Caring: A Matter of Justice." Encouraging attendees to embrace diversity as preferable to sameness, Isasi-Diaz will explore how embracing our unique differences strengthens our solicitude - our ability to care about, care for and care with.

As the "village weaver," Pamela Cooper-White PhD, professor of pastoral theology at The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, will circulate among the attendees, listen to the speakers and then weave together the concepts and practical ideas discussed throughout the conference in the closing plenary session.

In addition, a series of pre-conference educational workshops will be held January 30-31. On January 30, the SCC benefit Golf Outing will be held, and APC leadership meetings will be held January 31.

For further details on Spiritual Care Summit '09, please visit the SCC Web site. Conference registration forms and online registration will be available on the SCC site by late summer.

Summit '09 Offers Sponsorship Opportunities
By Mary Kendrick Moore BCC

The Spiritual Care Summit '09, sponsored by the Spiritual Care Collaborative, is an unprecedented event in the history of spiritual care. Not only will it bring together six pastoral care, counseling and education associations, but it will reach beyond our memberships to other disciplines interested in spiritual care.

In order to maximize the potential of this event, the Fundraising Committee has created a wide range of sponsorship opportunities. Clarion Health was the first to become a major sponsor at the $20,000 level.

We expect an attendance of well over 2,000. Now is the time to invite organizations in which you are involved to be a part of this ground-breaking event. Also, consider whether you or persons you know can make a personal commitment to become a sponsor.

Sponsorship offers a number of benefits, according to the level of sponsorship, including presentation of the sponsor's name in pre-conference publications, advertising in conference publications and reservations at selected special events.

A complete description of all sponsorship levels will be posted to the SCC Web site within the next two weeks - they were not quite ready in time for this publication. Until they are posted, you may contact Chaplain Ted Hodge, chair of the Summit '09 Fundraising Committee at Thodge@BHSI.com.

Mary Kendrick Moore BCC is the publicist for APC and is serving on the Summit '09 Publications Committee. She may be contacted at mary.moore1014@comcast.net.
