A Campus Ministry for ALL Students, Supported by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Sunday and Wednesday Worship: 7:00 p.m., free suppers at 6:15
510 N. Guadalupe (across from the Tower Garage)

Our Purpose:  In gratitude for God's mercy in Christ, we shall be a community of worship, service, and hospitality.
One of the nice things about starting school when you are a kid is that you usually got some new jeans and school supplies.  New pencils, notebooks, and markers all have their own peculiar smell, an odor of optimism or perhaps the scent of impending doom, depending on your attitude toward school.  What's nice about starting college is that you've got a chance for a new beginning, even if you don't have new jeans to show for it.  The categories and cliques that dominate high school life don't matter any more; you can explore new ideas, new identities, new ways of thinking about the world.  And that process continues every year, which is the point of an education.  It is not to get a degree or even master a particular discipline.  It is to discover yourself and the ideas that inspire you and lead you to your true vocation.
And a vocation is not necessarily a job, or even your career.  A vocation is your calling, from the Latin word "vocare."  It is where God's work is done through your work, where your true purpose is lived out in a way that gives you joy and serves the world's needs.
Christ Chapel Campus Ministry exists in no small part to help you discern your vocation.  We pay attention to the call God is making on our lives, doing so through worship, service, study, retreats, and just hanging out together.  It's time for a new beginning; let us be part of that for you.  Below are a few ways we can do that together...

Evening Prayer: Something Fresh Every Wednesday Night

Christ Chapel holds a service every Wednesday night at 7:00, after enjoying dinner at 6:15.  Here's what's coming up on Wednesdays in the weeks ahead...

August 29: New Beginnings Evening Prayer:  A time to start the new semester with prayer and reflection together.

September 5:  Evening Prayer and Labor Day

September 12:  Evening Prayer with a Professor: Dr. Dann Brown, Dean of the University College

September 19: Contemplative Evening Prayer

September 26:  Evening Prayer with a Professor: Dr. Deborah Harris, Department of Sociology

HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE HOUSE OPEN
Free, Organic, Fair-Trade Coffee, Tea, and Hot Chocolate
Higher Grounds is a coffee house, not a shop, because everything is absolutely free.  We hope you'll come by and try some great coffee and enjoy a comfortable lounge with wi-fi and good conversation.  Or, just get a cup to go.  Open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Eat Well, Feed Well.

We are blessed to be so well fed by friends and area congregations every Sunday night that it's only right we should feed others as well.  One bunch who really know what it means to be hungry are the homeless of San Marcos, a population estimated to be about 350.  Thirty-five to forty of the homeless gather every night for a warm meal at the Southside Community Center on Guadalupe Street, less than two miles from the campus.  We will be cooking at Christ Chapel on the third Monday of each month, starting on September 17th.  We'll gather to cook at 3:00, then take the food to the center where we will serve them and eat dinner with them.  Look to sign up in the weeks ahead.

God Goes to the Movies:  September 18, 8:00 p.m.

Yeah, you've probably seen it, but you can see it again with an eye toward the theology of the movie.  Where is God in it all? What can we learn from it that can help our spiritual lives?  Come join us on 9/18 in the lounge (downstairs at Christ Chapel) to watch it on our jumbo TV with surround sound.  Popcorn provided.

Jesus on Tap:  Where Do Politics and Faith Responsibly Intersect? - September 4, 2012
We've all seen examples of faith run amok in the political sphere, with very conservative Christians dominating the conversation in this country.  There are other voices, but they are often drowned out.  Should they be heard?  Should policies be guided by principles of faith? Whose?  We'll talk about the role of faith in politics at Jesus on Tap at Wake the Dead Coffee House on September 4th at 8:00 p.m.  Wake the Dead is just a few blocks north of the campus on Old Ranch Road 12, near the intersection of that road and Franklin.  You can't miss it, either the event or the coffee house.

REVIEWS

St. Pita's:   Not a particularly long menu, but everything is fresh and well-prepared at this trailer eatery located at the Hitch on CM Allan and Hopkins.  I got the falafel, which were perfectly crisp on the exterior, with a soft, pillowy interior and perfect seasoning.  The spicy sauce was a star as well.  They are a colossal mess to eat, but well worth the effort.

Ryan Jensen, Updated:  The new UCM-Wesley campus minister is a great guy with a great heart and a vision for ministry.  Having worked together this summer, I know we'll have many happy years of cooperation between Christ Chapel and our partners in ministry in this building. Best of all, Ryan is just about as weirdly neurotic as I am with regard to things being tidy. There's some expression about great minds thinking alike that you can add here.
