A Campus Ministry for ALL Students, Supported by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Sunday and Wednesday Worship: 7:00 p.m., free suppers at 6:15
510 N. Guadalupe (across from the Tower Garage)
WELCOME (BACK) TO TEXAS STATE

If you are a new student or returning, welcome to a great year.  We want Christ Chapel to be a place where you can be yourself and be challenged, have fun and be serious, look for answers and live with the questions.  Christ Chapel isn't high school youth group.  It's for men and women who want to discover why Jesus matters, and we figure it out through worship, meals, retreats, movies, games, service projects, Spring Break mission trips, and more.  Below are a few of things happening in the weeks ahead.  Come join us; you won't regret it.

SUPPER AND THE HOLY SUPPER

Actual dinner may vary.

Our first Sunday evening dinner and worship service is coming up on the 21st at 6:15.  Faculty, staff, mentors, and friends of Christ Chapel are cooking for us, and it is always one of the best meals of the year.  After supper, we worship together at 7:00 p.m., a service that includes the Eucharist every week.  If you play an instrument, bring it along.  Our style is joyful and reflective, deliberate and playful, and it is a great way to start your week.

IGNIGHT: WEDNESDAY EVENING SUPPER AND ???

Ignight is the new name for our Wednesday evening time together.  Every Wednesday night will be different, so "worship" isn't always the right word. Some nights will include conversations with professors about their faith and their work at Texas State. Some nights will be more of a group bible study.  Some nights will include vespers and evening prayer liturgies from Episcopal and Lutheran sources, while some nights will include experiential learning through art or music.  Ignite begins at 7:00 p.m. and is usually over by 7:45.  And if you come at 6:15, you can take part in...

WEDNESDAY SUPPER: The weekly Wednesday worship service and supper of our friends at UCM-Wesley starts at 5:30, with supper at 6:15.  That's when we join them for a great meal cooked by the students and staff of UCM.   UCM stands for "United Campus Ministry," and includes the Methodist, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and Disciples of Christ denominations. The first Bobcat Supper is Wednesday, August 24th, with pizza on the menu.  August 31st is their Fall kick-off dinner, with Fuschak's BBQ brisket and sausage.  UCM students are a great bunch and always welcoming of people from any faith backgrounds, or none at all.

AND IN CASE YOU CAN'T MAKE A WEDNESDAY OR SUNDAY MEAL...

August 30th - Late-Night Breakfast Bible Study!

We'll gather at 10:00 p.m. in the kitchen at Christ Chapel for pancakes, sausage, eggs, bacon, orange juice, and coffee, followed by a brief Bible study.  Come a little earlier if you would like to help cook.

God Goes to the Movies: September 15th, 8:00 p.m.

Join us to watch on our entirely awesome 42" flat-screen with surround-sound and Blue-Ray DVD player the Oscar-winning "Book of Eli." If you haven't seen it, it's a post-apocalptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.  If you have seen it, watch it again with this question in mind: Where's God in it all.  Popcorn provided.  Bring a friend.

WHY YOU ARE GETTING THIS NEWSLETTER

A lot of you will be getting this newsletter for the very first time and are wondering why.  We might have gotten your name from a congregation, youth minister, or pastor, or you may have signed up for a prize at our booth during Boko's Block Party.  Whatever the reason, we understand that this organization may not appeal to you.  If so, just follow the instructions at the bottom of the page to unsubscribe.  It's really easy.  Meanwhile, for those of you who signed up to win a $25 gift certificate to Which Wich, the winners are Jasmin Vaughan and Connor Smith.  Come by 510 N. Guadalupe to claim your prize.

HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE HOUSE

Our free, fairly traded and organic coffee will be open Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting on August 29th.  We also have free tea, and for a limited time, free cocoa.  You can drink it in the lounge or take it with you.  And, by the way, it's free.  Tell people about this place; we've got wi-fi also, and it's a great place to study.

REVIEWS

The Help:   I liked the movie better than the book, but that's only because I haven't actually read the book.  It's a funny, troubling, and ultimately hopeful movie, but potentially problematic if we see it only as a history lesson.  The virulent racism the movie portrays is not dead and gone.  It is usually more subtly expressed these days, but racism isn't expunged from our system like a supper of bad clams.  It is a poison worth our continued wariness, around us and within us.  That the movie can help us be honest about our attitudes means it has served a good purpose.

WESSENDORFF: A RETREAT LIKE NO OTHER

What's Wessendorff?  It's a beautiful multi-hundred acre retreat facility just 30 miles from San Marcos.  We'll relax, eat, play games, and learn about spiritual practices that match our spiritual gifts.  We'll also have some friends join us from campus ministries across our area.  When?  September 30 through October 2nd.  How much?  Not sure yet, but not too much.  Look for more details soon.
