LIVING THE QUESTIONS: A FAITH FOR GROWN-UPS
No offense intended, but a lot of bible study and Christian education is pretty simple, connect-the-dots kind of stuff, with a lot of the serious, important questions left unasked. But can you be serious about your faith and NOT ask those questions? For example, what if you really have trouble understanding Jesus' virgin birth? What about the miracles? All those questions and more are faced with grown-up, no more Veggie Tales kinds of answers in "Living the Questions," a multi-week study and introduction to progressive Christianity. LTQ is an open-minded alternative to studies that give all the answers and instead invites participants to think aloud together about the heart and future of the Christian faith. We begin SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26 at 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch at a different San Marcos restaurant each week. Questions? e-mail Pr. Jaime. |
SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE AND SAUSAGE SUPPER
Shrove Tuesday, or "Fat Tuesday," or "Mardi Gras" marks the last night before the fasting and discipline of Ash Wednesday and Lent. The "Fat" part comes from the tradition of using up all the fat, rich foods in the pantry that day. We'll mark the day with a Pancake and Sausage supper at 6:15 on Tuesday, March 8th. Come hungry, and maybe mix in some vegetable for your lunch that day. |

FLASH HIKE WITH FRIDA!
Like a flash mob, but we'll be hiking the really pretty Purgatory Creek Nature Trail at 3:00 on Saturday, February 26. The hike will be led by Frida, Pr. Jaime's intrepid dog. Meet at the trail head at 3:30. Where is it? Take RR12 north to Craddock; turn left on Craddock and continue ACROSS the Wonderworld Extension. Go until Craddock ends, then turn right down the gravel road for about 1/2 mile. Total hike: 5 miles in length, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera if you want to take pictures. |

Dr. Thomas Cheatham, Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications to be at "Evening Prayer with a Professor"
Dr. Cheatham is a well-loved and respected faculty member and Dean, whose insights into how his faith impacts his work as Dean will be the focus of our meeting on Wednesday evening, March 2nd. Join us for supper at 6:15, followed by a gathering with Dr. Cheatham at 7:00 p.m. Also on that evening:
Seminary Recruiters: If you've ever considered seminary, at least two admissions officers from Wartburg Seminary and Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago will join us for conversation before and after Dr. Cheatham's presentation. And look what else is happening...
March 9 - Ash Wednesday Service with UCM-Wesley, 5:30 p.m.
March 23 - Taize Evening Prayer: We'll use the hypnotically beautiful music of the Taize Community to guide our time together.
March 30 - Evening Prayer on Mount Baldy in Wimberley: A great view and a great place to think about all the times mountains show up in the Bible and what they might mean for us. |

God Goes to the Movies: March 3rd, 8:00 p.m.
Join us to watch on our entirely awesome 42" flat-screen with surround-sound and Blue-Ray DVD player the Oscar-winning "Little Miss Sunshine." If you haven't seen it, it's about a family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus. Very funny. If you have seen it, watch it again with this question in mind: Where's God in it all? Popcorn provided. Bring a friend. |

SPRING BREAK PLANS? HOW ABOUT CAMPING WITH OUR FRIENDS FROM UCM-WESLEY?
A limited number of spots are available to go camping over part of Spring Break NOT at Big Bend, but at the Big Thicket, a beautiful park in East Texas. People have called the Big Thicket an American ark and the biological crossroads of North America and is noted for its biological diversity. We'll go hiking, canoeing, and more. The cost is $75 and covers most meals, park entrance, and transportation. We'll leave on March 13th and come back on the 18th. Contact Ryan Jenson at 512-665-0260 or rj@fumc.org for more information and for what camping gear will be needed. |

Our free, fairly traded and organic coffee is now available again Mondays through Fridays, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We also have free tea, and for a limited time, free cocoa. You can drink it in the lounge or take it with you. And, by the way, it's free. Tell people about this place; we've got wi-fi also, and it's a great place to study. |

REVIEWS
Lyndon's: Last month, I mentioned that Lyndon's, a new restaurant, just opened in the basement of the Student Center. I finally ate at the place last week. It is very nicely decorated and the wait-staff was extremely polite. Unfortunately, the mission of the restaurant seems confused. Lunch options include an expensive and limited buffet ($13) or a menu that includes a few appetizers and an uninspired sandwich menu similar to any diner. I had a nice conversation with the chef, who admitted that he was brand new and only starting to get a handle on what the place might be. Not surprisingly, weekly conversations he holds with other chefs and cooks in Chartwells does not include trading ideas for menu items.
Animal Videos on YouTube:
Animals are cute, especially the kind that aren't generally interested in eating you. Such is the case with "Slow Loris Being Tickled," a testimony to the universality of the pleasure of having your tummy rubbed. "Never Argue with an Ibex" demonstrates abilities I didn't know an ibex had, and includes an opportunity to practice one's Spanish as an interviewer seeks an ibex's opinion on the leadership abilities of Mexico's President Felipe Calderon. |
SPRING BREAK: BIG BEND and DESERT SPIRITUALITY
What's up for Spring Break? Nothing in concrete yet, but it is looking like a trip to Terlingua, Texas, with day trips and an overnight stay in Big Bend National Park. We'll spend Saturday, March 12th travelling, and then take a day trips to Big Bend each day. Those desiring can camp out on Monday, March 14th in the Chisos Basin. We'll return on Wednesday, March 16th, so you will still have plenty of time to relax for the rest of your break. While there, we will learn something from the Desert Fathers of a spirituality to accompany that landscape. Space is limited to 12; to reserve your spot, please make a $50 deposit, payable to Christ Chapel, at your earliest convenience. Final costs (which we'll try to keep low) and final plans will be announced in the next two weeks. |
Our campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship. | |
