510 N. Guadalupe (across from the Tower Garage) |
WELCOME BACK, AGAIN
It's a new semester and a new year, and if you were thinking all last semester, "I really should look into that campus ministry thing," now is a great time. Below you'll see just a few of the things we've planned for the weeks ahead in our student-led, not your parent's church, great place to make friends, cool place to hang out, college just got a lot better campus ministry. As always, we have Sunday worship with Holy Communion at 7:00 in the evening, with a free home-cooked supper at 6:15, and a Wednesday evening service at 7:00, preceded by dinner with our friends from UCM-Wesley at 6:15. No experience is necessary, we won't weird you out, and you will go away with at least a little more hope and joy; sometimes a lot. |

Provost Perry Moore at Evening Prayer with a Professor
THE provost of Texas State University will be our guest this Wednesday, January 26th, for our Evening Prayer with a Professor series. As Provost, Dr. Moore oversees the integrity of the academic program of the entire university. He does a lot more stuff, too, and he does it all with his Christian faith in mind. Come hear how his confession affects his profession this Wednesday. Join us for supper at 6:15 (a BBQ extravaganza hosted by our friends at UCM-Wesley), followed by a gathering with Dr. Moore at 7:00 p.m. And look what else is happening on Wednesdays...
February 3 - Evening Prayer with a Professor: Dr Richard Earl, Department of Geography
February 10 - Communion Bread Baking (and for a take-home snack)
February 17 - Evening Prayer with a Professor: Dr. Dean Gueras, Department of Philosophy |

God Goes to the Movies: January 27, 8:00 p.m.
Join us to watch on our fairly awesome 42" flat-screen with surround-sound and Blue-Ray DVD player the great 1986 Oscar-nominated "Stand By Me". This is a funny, touching, dramatic film based on a story by Stephen King. Where's God in the lives of four boys looking to find the body of a missing boy? Popcorn provided. |
Jesus on Tap February 3: "Does Prayer Do Any Good?"
Lots of people pray, or say they do. What happens when a prayer isn't answered? Does that mean God doesn't care, or is powerless, or p ointless? Should you pray for things you don't need or deserve, like a good grade when you haven't studied? What's the right way to pray? Join us at Tantra (across Hopkins from the little HEB) on Thursday, February 3rd at 7:30 to talk about these questions and whatever else is on your mind Jesus-wise. Bring a friend and and ID if you want to take part in the "tap" part of the event. |

Diocesan Council/Youth in Action/Cookie Baking/Preventing Sexual Abuse of Minors
Yes, all these things have something in common. The Episcopal Diosece of West Texas is holding their annual gathering ("Council") in San Marcos on February 17-19. Christ Chapel will be sharing a booth at the event with other campus ministries, and students are welcome to participate in staffing the booth. Contact Brad Eubanks, Christ Chapel program assistant, to volunteer (brad.eubanks@gmail.com). All the congregations of the Diocese that support our ministry will be in attendance, so it is a great opportunity to show what we are doing. MEANWHILE, a simultaneous event will be going on starting Friday evening, February 18-20 in the form of 130 6th-12th graders staying in the downstairs rooms of Christ Chapel, along with their youth ministers. They will be doing mission projects throughout San Marcos on the 19th, and then take part in a Eucharist worship led by Pr. Jaime at 8:30 on Sunday. If you would like to meet these youth or volunteer to work with them in any way, you'll need to go through "Safeguarding God's Children," a sexual abuse prevention training on Sunday, February 13 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Chapel. The training is free and looks great in your portfolio, and is simply a good idea if you ever plan to work with youth or children. MEANWHILE, Christ Chapel has also volunteered to provide 600 of the 12,000 cookies needed for the Council meeting, so we will gather at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12th, for a cookie baking session. Come join us! |

Late-Night Breakfast and Bible Study: Just Because
Tuesday, February 1st, 10 p.m. Late Night Breakffast Bible Study is a great time to take a break, have some breakfast, and take a quick dip into the Bible. You'll be done by 11:00, plenty of time to get another four or five hours of studying in before your 8:00 class. |
Soon on Saturdays: Faith, Scripture, Lunch
Join us starting Saturday, February 5 at 11:00 for the first of a multi-week series using a great video curriculum called "Living the Questions." This acclaimed course offers a thoughtful and challenging call to living the Christian faith with seriousness of purpose and with joy. It's a Bible study, but so much more; those who want to be confirmed in the Episcopal or Lutheran church can attend and get all they would have ever gotten in a traditional confirmation class and more. Living the Questions will last for 7 weeks for an hour and a half, after which we will meander to a different San Marcos restaurant every week for lunch together. Call or e-mail Pr. Jaime with any questions. |

REVIEWS
Lyndon's: If you don't already know, Lyndon's, named for Texas State's most famous graduate, is a new dining place in the lower level of the LBJ Student Center. What do I know? I haven't eaten there yet, and I don't suspect students will often, as the rumor is it only accepts limited and precious Dining Dollars, rather than meal trades. Alas. If I get to go, I will let you know how it is.
Mutant M & M's:
Plain worked just fine, but the peanut kind were a nice alternative. But now Mars Co. has gone crazy, making M & M's with coconut centers and pretzel centers. They are nice to try once, but they will never supplant the originals. New isn't always better, unless we're talking about the new life that is ours in Christ. In that case, the center is sweet and tastier than any life you could know. |
SPRING BREAK: BIG BEND and DESERT SPIRITUALITY
What's up for Spring Break? Nothing in concrete yet, but it is looking like a trip to Terlingua, Texas, with day trips and an overnight stay in Big Bend National Park. We'll spend Saturday, March 12th travelling, and then take a day trips to Big Bend each day. Those desiring can camp out on Monday, March 14th in the Chisos Basin. We'll return on Wednesday, March 16th, so you will still have plenty of time to relax for the rest of your break. While there, we will learn something from the Desert Fathers of a spirituality to accompany that landscape. Space is limited to 12; to reserve your spot, please make a $50 deposit, payable to Christ Chapel, at your earliest convenience. Final costs (which we'll try to keep low) and final plans will be announced in the next two weeks. |
Our campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship. | |
