BEING COLD IS NO FUN

El Buen Pastor, Piedras Negras, Mexico, and Church of the Redeemer, Eagle Pass, Texas join together to gather blankets for those in need.  Padre Miguel Cristerna and Rev. Maria Elena Daniel Cristerna have named this program "Piedras Negras Sin Frio" meaning no one suffers from the cold. This year Piedras Negras Sin Frio has a goal to give 1,000 blankets out on both sides of the Border.   There are two ways for us at Christ Chapel to participate:  Bring a new or very gently used to Christ Chapel, or donate $7 (the average cost of one blanket in Piedras Negras).  We can make a real difference!

Jesus on Tap TONIGHT!  "What's Christmas Really?"

What's oangelsn your mind, Jesus-wise?  Lots of odd customs emerge around Christmas, most of which have nothing to do with thre real story.  Come join an informal conversation over beverages of your choice tonight, November 30th, 7:30 at Tantra.  Bring your questions, and possibly your i.d., if you want to take part in the "tap" part of the event.

Holden Evening Prayer/Service of Healing

Our final Evening Prayer of the semester will be on Wednesday, December 1st, 7:00 p.m.  We'll use Holden Evening Prayer and take time for prayers for healing and wholeness as we go into the finals  week.

The Snowball Banquet is Saturday, and YOU are Invited!

What an honor for us at Christ Chapel to be invitated by UCM-Wesley to attend their annual Snowball Banquet!  That there are no snowballs to be found around here is not important.  What matters is that we have been deliberately included in this event, which begins at 6:00 on Saturday, December 4th.  We'll go caroling, and then gather for supper, followed by a dance.  Dress as you will, but nice is nice.

On Christmas

Nothing says, "Happy Birthday, Jesus!" like a Chia pet.  Except almost anything else.  As has often been asked, why if it is Jesus' birthday does everyone else get the gifts?  Of course, part of the anser is that in giving gifts to others, we are expressing our gratitude for that person and an appreciation of the gift he or she is to us.  And Jesus?  He's God's great gift to us, the gift that makes us children of God, brothers and sisters to the baby in the manger and the King of Kings, the Alpha and the Omega, the Light of the World.  So yes, it would be appropriate to give Jesus a gift.  In as much as he doesn't need a Chia pet, how about a gift to one of his brothers or sisters that needs a blanket?  "As you do for the least," Jesus said in a parable, "You do for me."  Give it a try; it's amazing how much brighter the manger will glow.  And MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all, who are truly gifts to me.  - Pastor Jaime

Christmas Party/Lock-In/Breakfast!

Monday, December 6th, 8:00 p.m. is Christ Chapel's annual Christmas Party, Lock-In, and Late Night Breakfast!  Bring a gift to be shared (no more than $5 in value) and we'll do the swap game.  Breakfast will be served at 10:00 p.m.  General mayhem in the form of Foam Dart Wars will follow, as well asbreakfast movies, video games, and board games.  Stay as late as you will; the locks don't really work on the doors on this night.  Bring a friend, and don't worry too much about the gift part.  There will be some extras.  Home-made is outstanding, by the way.  Don't forget to bring any favorite games, either.

T-Shirts Have Arrived!

Our new Christ Chapel t-shirts, designed by our very own Alli Rogers, have arrived!  Everyone who pre-ordered is guaranteed a shirt, pending payment of a measly $5.  A very few extra of most sizes were ordered for those negligent and poorly informed.

REVIEWS

Random Acts of Culture:  The Knight Foundation is funding 1000 random acts of culture in cities across the United States over the next three years.  So far, one of the most moving is the scene of over 600 participants from the Philadelphia Opera Company breaking into Handel's Hallelujah Chorus at a Macy's in Philadelphia (see it at knightarts.org/random-acts-of-culture) Shoppers are rightly amazed.  I wish I could have been there.  It's a great video to watch to get into the Christmas spirit.

Babies:

It's a movie about four babies and the first year of their lives.  While it may sound like something you'd have to watch in health class, it is really a profound exploration of culture, socialization, and values.  As you might expect, watching a baby born in Tanzania grow up is a very different scene than one growing up in Tokyo, Mongolia, or San Francisco.  This is a beautiful film, beautifully filmed and edited.  And, there are chase scenes of sorts, for those who prefer action and adventure movies.
