Please express your intent by Monday, October 4th.  Cost: $40, except the real price is whatever you can pay.  Reserve your spot by writing: christchapel@txstate.edu  And yes, you can come out just on Saturday.  Look for directions at slumberfalls.org.
DOGMA
As some of you know, I now have a dog (or a dog now has me; it's hard to say) named Frida Kahlo, aka Frida Thunderbutt, Frida Fuzzbuns, Frida French Fry, and Ding-Dang-Dog-Stop-Jumping-On-Me.  She was found abandoned alongside a road, because some people can be cruel beyond words. But she was found alongside a road, because sometimes people can be equally kind.  She was taken home by the woman who found her and cared for until an adoptive family could be arranged, which turned out to be us.  Having a dog around is a new experience for us, but we have learned a lot from Frida.  She hasn't learned so much from us yet, but we'll keep trying ("I SAID, QUIT JUMPING ON ME!").  Here are a couple of lessons learned so far from Frida, and maybe how they might apply to our lives:
     1. Frida is utterly indiscriminate about what she eats or tries to eat. It must all taste good, even though some of it is clearly bad for her.  I suspect we're not as discriminating about what we take in as we should be, either.  Some stuff is just bad for us, even if it passes for entertainment.  I'm thinking graphically violent and sexually exploitive stuff here.
     2. Frida is always astonished and grateful when I come back home, acting as if she feared I were lost forever.  Her joy in me is not remotely deserved, but I am grateful (and annoyed - "#&*$@ dog, how many times do I have to tell you to quit jumping on me!").  While we could skip the Frida-esque jumping, we would do well to express our delight in each other more often and more freely.  And to that same point: I suspect God takes the same kind of delight in us when we come back home; we each know that God's delight in us is not remotely deserved, but there it is, for which we can all be grateful, and joyful, and glad.
More lessons from Frida will have to wait; it's too hard to type while she's jumping on me.  - Pastor Jaime

St. Francis: A Saint for Today

Special Worship Service on October 3rd
stfrancis

St. Francis loved God's creation and loved his life in Christ.  We will celebrate this saint with a special worship service on October 3rd.  Unlike our usual worship, we will dress up the place and pull out all the stops.  If you've wondered what a "high church" service looks like, this is the time to come.  We eat supper at 6:15 and worship at 7:00.

Nooma Bible Study, Starting Oct. 4th

Nooma is a video-based Bible study by Rob Bell that cuts right through the nonsense and gets to some terribly important questions.  Scripture and your own experience intersect for great, meaningful conversation.  Come join us at 6:00 on Mondays, starting October 4th.  No experience needed.  We'll meet in the Christ Chapel Lounge, in the lower level of our building.

God Goes to the Movies, September 29th, 8:00 pm:  "Serenity"

This is a great science-fiction/action-adventure film that explores some important ethical questions.  While based on the TV series "Firefly," you don't have to have seen Firefly to appreciate this movie.  Highly recommended.  Join us in the Christ Chapel Lounge, downstairs at Christ Chapel. Free.  Popcorn will be served.

Gospel Expressions: September 29th, 5:30

Join us with UCM-Wesley Foundation for Bobcat Supper at 5:30, where we will be treated to the amazing voices of Gospel Expressions, a Texas State student choir.  We will then have a free supper at 6:15.  This is going to be good.

Bishop Gary Lillibridge: Oct. 22nd, 9:30-11:45

Bishop Lillibridge, bishop of the Diocese of West Texas, is being honored as an Outstanding Alumni of Texas State on October 22nd.  Obviously, he graduated from Texas State (then Southwest Texas State), and is now a widely respected bishop of the Episcopal Church and a key figure in consultations with the Archbishop of Canterbury over the present and future of the Anglican Church.  He will be our guest from 9:00 until 11:30 on October 22nd at Christ Chapel.  He will welcome clergy and vestry members of area congregations from host a discussion of the present and future of campus ministry and its effect on his life from 10:45 to 11:45, while he will meet with area clergy and vestry members from 9:30 until 10:30.  Students are welcome to both events.  Excellent snacks will be served.

HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE HOUSE STILL OPEN!
Higher Grounds Coffee House is now open from 8:00-12:00 every morning. It's a house, not a shop, because the coffee is free, so there's nothing shop-like about it.  We serve free, fair-trade organic coffee and have a selection of teas as well.  Hook up to the Wi-Fi, study, get your caffiene on, relax, whatever.   Higher Grounds is located near the entry to Christ Chapel, 510 N. Guadalupe. You are also invited to join our Facebook fan page. Look for open mic nights and poetry slams in the semester ahead.
REVIEWS:
You are free to write your own for submission, by the way, and any article you want to write will be considered.
The Event - An interesting tv show, but if you just watch the first one, it won't make any sense.  Watch the second and you'll find the new "Lost," but without all the weirdness.  They have actually written the script out for two years, so it may not get unwatchable after a few episodes.  Until that happens, I'll be a fan.
Quad Conduct -  "Support illiteracy, y'all!"  "Support breast cancer."  I've heard them both now out on the Quad by well-meaning students soliciting change for their particular cause.  Not surprisingly, I've given money to neither.  I am, for the record, firmly against both illiteracy and breast cancer.  For a cause to gather support, it helps to think about what you're saying.  That goes for the cause that is Christ, too.
Guns on Campus - Bizarrely, the recent incident at UT has galvanized support for a concealed weapon right on college campuses in Texas.  An ROTC student said he thought it was nuts; "I trust law enforcement.  I don't want to trust in students carrying a gun."  As the spouse of a faculty member who has had to deal with more than one upset student, I agree with him.  This isn't an article of faith, so if you disagree, fine, but you can write your point of view in next month's newsletter.
