RETREAT ON THE CHEAP!
Wessendorff is a great retreat center just 35 miles from Texas State, and home of one of the finest natural swimming holes around. On September 17-19th, we will join friends from Baylor University for two days of relaxing, eating, swimming, cliff diving (optional), movie watching and more. Our theme will be "New Beginnings," which all of are making and could use some help with. Space is limited, so register your intent by Wednesday, September 15th. Cost: $10, with scholarships available. |
SUSTAINABLE FAITH Sustainable faith, like the sustainable use of other resources that is the University's theme for 2010-2011, is a faith that lasts for a lifetime. Unlike other resources, however, faith can be depleted and the spiritual well run dry seemingly overnight. New insights from classes and perspectives from new friends can make a faith that hasn't been tried seem flimsy and inadequate. A sustainable faith not only recognizes the challenges, but grows from them and through them into a mature expression of Christianity that can truly sustain you. Indeed, a faith that isn't ever challenged and refuses to grow is no faith at all, but mere intellectual stubborness and spiritual pride.
We don't think we have all the answers here at Christ Chapel; we are on the journey with you, not ahead of you. What we do have is a space where you are never asked to check your brains at the door, never advised to just accept something as true, never disdained for your intellectual curiosity, and never rejected because of a different perspective or attitude. We have a place to grow a sustainable faith that is a refreshing alternative to the simplistic fundamentalism to which so many cling. Come join us on the journey, and please bring your brain. - Pastor Jaime |
OTHER EVENTS
NOOMA Bible Study - Mondays at 6:00 An individual NOOMA is a short film (between 10 and 14 minutes long) about God, told in a way that fits our time. Like parables, NOOMAs use the experiences from everyday life to illustrate the teachings of Jesus, tackling issues from God's unconditional love and comfort to his meaning for our lives and his forgiveness. Join us at 6:00 on Mondays in the Christ Chapel Lounge (downstairs); we'll be through by 7:00.
FREE SUPPER AND WORSHIP EVERY SUNDAY EVENING We welcome you to Sunday evening supper and worship, starting August 22nd. Mentors and friends provide a home-cooked meal each Sunday night at 6:15, followed by worship with Holy Communion at 7:00. No cost, no experience necessary, no weirdness; just people who like to eat and worship. For more about us, see our website at christchapeltxstate.org.
WED. WORSHIP AND SUPPER OR SUPPER AND WORSHIP
You are invited to come to UCM's 5:30 worship service and stay for Bobcat Supper at 6:15, or come to Bobcat Supper and stay for Christ Chapel's Evening Prayer at 7:00. Or both, if you are so inclined. A schedule of special Wednesday evening events is available in the entry hall to Christ Chapel, so you will know about guest speakers (such as Provost Perry Moore) and events such as
GOD GOES TO THE MOVIES, SEPTEMBER 8, 8:00 p.m. "Sergeant Bilko," starring Steve Martin. This is a very funny movie that has much to say about values and friendship, honesty and integrity. Come laugh and think through with us what God might be saying in this movie.
LATE NIGHT BREAKFAST BIBLE STUDY, SEP.14, 10:00 p.m. Join us for breakfast and a bible study; eggs, sausage, pancakes, orange juice, and Scripture, all at the right time of night. And then there are the retreats, such as... JESUS ON TAP, SEP. 21, 7:30 p.m. Join us at Tantra (across from the little HEB) for conversations about theology, God, church, faith, doubt, or whatever else crosses your life and mind. |
HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE HOUSE NOW OPEN!
Higher Grounds Coffee House is now open from 8:00-12:00 every morning. It's a house, not a shop, because the coffee is free, so there's nothing shop-like about it. We serve free, fair-trade organic coffee and have a selection of teas as well. Hook up to the Wi-Fi, study, get your caffiene on, relax, whatever. Higher Grounds is located near the entry to Christ Chapel, 510 N. Guadalupe. You are also invited to join our Facebook fan page. Look for open mic nights and poetry slams in the semester ahead. |
REVIEWS
Pirahna 3D - Mind-candy featuring... (spoiler alert) lots of pirahnas in 3-D. I thought it was great for the kind of movie it's trying to be; a comic horror film. 3-D pirahnas rule; the only thing better might be 3-D zombie pirahnas.
Bobcat Football - Ouch. That first game didn't go well, but if Texas State HAD won, it would have been national news, given the mismatch. Let us not flag in our Bobcat pride, nor give up being staunch athletic supporters. We should have a good shot at the FCS playoffs, at least.
PetSmart - A remarkable demonstration of how our priorities are just a little off. I've got a great dog and my wife has what she claims is a great cat, and we do more than a few nice things for them. But we are slackers when it comes to the kind of nonsense one can do for one's pet, especially dogs. An entire aisle is dedicated to dog toys, but there's worse; enormously elaborate cat scratching trees and hundred-dollar dog beds and more. Even if you don't have a pet, it's worth going in to see what is possible. Now I don't bedgrudge people spending their money as they wish, nor PetSmart for making a profit. I'm just aware that while we spend billions on our pets every year, there are millions of hungry and needy children in this country, who are often begrudgingly thrown a few tax dollars administered through overwhelmed agencies. I don't have an answer here, just an observation. |
Our campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship. | |
