CHRIST CHAPEL - SAME NAME, NEW FRIENDS!
There have been a few changes over the summer at Christ Chapel, the most obvious being that we now share our space and schedule with our friends from United Campus Ministry, Wesley Foundation. It's a long story and not that interesting as to how this new situation came to be, but the short version is that the cost of maintaining Christ Chapel by ourselves was too much. The sale of their former building to the University allowed UCM-Wesley Foundation to buy Christ Chapel and for us to remain as tenants for the indefinite future. Meanwhile, proceeds from their purchase allows Christ Chapel to maintain a great program in the same great place. We'll always be a busy place now, better using this great gift of a building for generations of students to come. While much of Christ Chapel's programming will remain the same, we will be joining with UCM on some events, as they will be joining us. And whether you've been a regular or just dropped by on occasion, you'll like the new look of the place and the great people you'll meet. So come on by, and bring a friend!
KICK-OFF BBQ, SEPTEMBER 1st One of the many ways we'll be working with UCM is in honoring and taking part in their long tradition of Wednesday evening worship and suppers, including the Kick-Off BBQ on September 1st. Join UCM for worship at 5:30, featuring special music from Andrew Howard, lead singer of the Standouts, followed by Fuchak's Barbeque. Or come for dinner and join Christ Chapel's Contemplative Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m. Either way, there is food for the body and soul. |
THINKING ON THINKING There is value in learning how to do a particular job, and a college education is often the necessary route. On the other hand, an education isn't just about a job. It is about learning how to think, how to critically evaluate information, and make an informed decision based on the information available, one's experiences, and one's values. To think is the gift that a college education gives, that can't be taken away, that lasts a lifetime and that is necessary no matter what sort of work you do. And we could use some thinking: a poll released today, for example, finds 1 in 5 Americans believing our President to be a Muslim.
Really? And we didn't land on the moon, and vaccines cause autism, and you name the nonsense, and there is a surprising number of people who believe it. Of course, some would say the Christian faith falls in the category of nonsense, but there remains for all its critics an incredible power in the message of a God who loves unconditionally and invites us into a new way of life marked by that same kind of love.
That's not the sort of thing that will be taught in your classes, but the education you do receive and the care and support of the Christian community that is Christ Chapel combine for a way of thinking and living that can't be taken away, that lasts a lifetime and is a blessing no matter what kind of work you do. Come join us; if it is your first year or last year at Texas State, Christ Chapel is always a good place to learn what really matters. - Pastor JB |
| FREE SUPPER AND WORSHIP EVERY SUNDAY EVENING
We welcome you to Sunday evening supper and worship, starting August 22nd. Mentors and friends provide a home-cooked meal each Sunday night at 6:15, followed by worship with Holy Communion at 7:00. No cost, no experience necessary, no weirdness; just people who like to eat and worship. For more about us, see our website at christchapeltxstate.org.
WED. WORSHIP AND SUPPER OR SUPPER AND WORSHIP
You are invited to come to UCM's 5:30 worship service and stay for Bobcat Supper at 6:15, or come to Bobcat Supper and stay for Christ Chapel's Evening Prayer at 7:00. Or both, if you are so inclined. A schedule of special Wednesday evening events is available in the entry hall to Christ Chapel, so you will know about guest speakers (such as Provost Perry Moore) and events such as
GOD GOES TO THE MOVIES, SEPTEMBER 8, 8:00 p.m. "Sergeant Bilko," starring Steve Martin. This is a very funny movie that has much to say about values and friendship, honesty and integrity. Come laugh and think through with us what God might be saying in this movie. Of course, not everthing happens on Wednesdays...
LATE NIGHT BREAKFAST BIBLE STUDY, SEP.14, 10:00 p.m. Join us for breakfast and a bible study; eggs, sausage, pancakes, orange juice, and Scripture, all at the right time of night. And then there are the retreats, such as... WESSENDORFF RETREAT, September 17-19. Join us for a fun retreat on the theme of New Beginnings. Swim the Narrows (a great swimming site), watch movies, eat lots, have fun. Cost: $10.00, due by Wednesday, September 15.
JESUS ON TAP, SEP. 21, 7:30 p.m. Join us at Tantra (across from the little HEB) for conversations about theology, God, church, faith, doubt, or whatever else crosses your life and mind. |
| BRAD EUBANKS, NOW AT YOUR ASSISTANCE
A grant from some friends of Christ Chapel means that we are blessed for the year ahead with the work of Brad Eubanks. He will be assisting with all aspects of our programming, including leadership development, structure, worship, outreach, and service. Brad has been leader of Canterbury at Texas Lutheran College and an intern for the Diocese of West Texas, and now comes to Texas State as a graduate student in Student Affairs. Welcome, Brad!
Among Brad's duties will be helping our peer ministers in their work; Marcus Green and Alli Rogers. Marcus will be involved with worship and service, while Alli will be engaged in hospitality and outreach, largely through Higher Grounds Coffee House. |
HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE HOUSE TO OPEN SOON!
Higher Grounds Coffee House will open very soon, with extended hours. It's a house, not a shop, because the coffee is free, so there's nothing shop-like about it. We serve free, fair-trade organic coffee and have a selection of teas as well. Hook up to the Wi-Fi, study, get your caffiene on, relax, whatever. Higher Grounds is located near the entry to Christ Chapel, 510 N. Guadalupe. You are also invited to join our Facebook fan page. Look for open mic nights and poetry slams in the semester ahead. |
OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS
The earlier mentioned Marcus Green is now engaged to Jessica Jeffers, while Brad Eubanks is engaged to Rachel Rhoades. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL! Congratulations also to Bear Vacek, recently engaged as well and planning a February wedding.
Come by and meet Marissa McCovey, office administrator for UCM-Wesley Foundation, and Dr. Mike Miller, UCM campus minister. They are great people, and you'll want to speak with Marissa if you ever need to park here for a few minutes. She is sweetness and light, but promises to be fast in calling a tow-truck.
Look for us starting right away on the Quad; come by for a Jolly Rancher and to meet Frida, Pr. Jaime's above-average dog. |
REVIEWS
Inception - Totally trippy, but I'm still not sure what it is about other than the story on the screen. It may be an extended version of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, or it may be about how our dreams become our reality and our reality our dreams. Worth watching on the big screen.
Eat, Pray, Love - My wife saw it and really liked it. She didn't say why.
Minute to Win It - Mostly frat and sorority games cleaned up for TV. My interest is not in who wins, but in who thought up these inane contests. That alcohol was involved seems obvious. Despite all that and the fact that it feels as if my brain has dripped out of my ears and my life is a wasteland after watching it, I still like it. Bouncing a quarter into a water jug for a million dollars, though, is never going to happen. |
