NOW OPEN! HIGHER GROUNDS COFFEE HOUSE
Higher Grounds Coffee House is open! It's a house, not a shop, because the coffee is free, so there's nothing shop-like about it. We serve free, fair-trade organic coffee and have a selection of teas as well. Hook up to the Wi-Fi, hang out, study, relax, whatever. Higher Grounds is located near the entry to Christ Chapel, 510 N. Guadalupe. Operating hours: 7:45 a.m. until at least 10:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. |
A Rueful Autodefenestration
One of our participants, a pleasantly insane adventurer, went to explore our bell-less belltower. Why? Because it is there, of course. After removing several pounds of cobwebs, he popped open the door in the floor, only to be starled by the squawk of a full grown vulture. She flapped her wings and then executed a rueful autodefenestration, as she was leaving behind two eggs. He soon left, and she soon returned to keep guard of her potential progeny.
Vultures are not the most attractive, clean, or cuddly of creatures, yet they know how to care for their own. We, whom Jesus says are of much more value than sparrows (and vultures, one dares guess), are likewise guarded by the One who watches over all of creation with infinite patience and care. And yet, even in the face of enemies, our God does not abandon us. Indeed, the entire point of the Easter season is to celebrate a God who enters into our lives, even the darkest and most broken places, even death itself, all to save us from harm. This is why we celebrate Easter; life wins. God wins. We have nothing, nothing at all to fear. A blessed Easter to you all. Pastor JB |

Jesus at the Pub: April 8, 7:30 p.m.
We've just started Easter, so the question is: Where have you seen, how have your experienced new life? We will meet at Tantra Coffee Shop, across from the little HEB grocery store. No experience is necessary and no one will be put down or embarrased. |
Also This Month...
April 7, 21: Evening Prayer with a Professor. Join us at 6:15 for supper, and then conversation with a professor on "How my Faith Confession Shapes my Profession." On April 7, we will be joined by Dr. Michael Huston, profesor of biology; on April 21st, we will meet with Profesor Gayle Gordon Bouzard, department of sociology.
Jones Diner Bible Study, Mondays at 6:00 p.m. We meet in the southern end of Jones Diner (the end without TVs) for an hour-long Bible Study, using articles from the newspapers of the week to then explore what the Bible has to say. The subjects are different every week, so you can join in at any time.

People of WalMart
I won't make it easier to find this web site by giving you the address, because it is ultimately just plain mean. I don't shop much at WalMart, largely because I don't appreciate their business model and how they treat their employees. But lots of people do shop there, and some are poor, and some don't have the greatest of fashion sense. Photos making fun of them just contributes to an atmosphere of divisiveness and does nothing to build up a society or nation. Okay, the one picture of a couple tanning in the parking lot outside of their RV is pretty funny, but that is somewhat different than making fun of the poor. My strong suspicion is that when every other barrier and prejudice falls, when color or gender or orientation or age no longer matter, we will still struggle to recognize the poor as our brothers and sisters. Maybe that's why Scripture has more to say on how we care for the poor than just about any other subject.

God Goes to the Movies: Thursday, April 15, 8:00 p.m. - "Gran Torino"
Wallt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) is a grumpy, tough-minded, unhappy an old man, who can't get along with either his kids or his neighbors and a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1972 Gran Torino he keeps in mint condition. When his neighbor Thao, a young Hmong teenager under pressure from his gang member cousin, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Can this Golden Globe-nominated and multiple award winning movie have anything to say about God? Come find out with us.
Our campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship.
