Christ Chapel News

A Campus Ministry for ALL Students, Supported by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Sunday and Wednesday Worship: 7:00 p.m., free supper at 6:15 510 N. Guadalupe (across from the Tower Garage)
Navajo Spring Break, Retreats, Free Coffee...

No, the three aren't related, except that they are all things that will be happening this semester at Christ Chapel.  It's a cheap ploy to get you to read more.  Please do!  And it's okay to check the little box at the top of the page to allow pictures.  The newsletter company that we use is VERY reliable and safe.

Bread and Belonging:  bread
Our Wednesday night gatherings begin again on January 20th with a free home-cooked supper at 6:15, followed by an informal prayer service.  We'll be using an Epiphany Evening Prayer as the basis of our worship for the next few weeks.  If you've been thinking about giving us a try, this is a great time to start.
Spring Break, 2010:  Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Navajo Nation

Plans are still in development, but it looks like we'll spend Spring Break meeting, learning from, and working with brothers and sisters of the Navajo tribe in New Mexico.  Hands-on service and education, plus a solid dose of recreation.  If you are interested in finding out more or reserving a spot, e-mail me at christchapel@txstate.edu and you will be put on the list.  Space is limited; costs are still being estimated, but it should be reasonable.  We will return in time for you to have a couple of days of relaxation before classes start again.

Theology on Tap - January 28 at Tantra, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.  Theme:  Nature v. Nurture
We're simply gathering at a place where, well, a variety of beverages are available in order to talk God.  Our opening question (but not the only one) will be on the subject of nature versus nurture.  How much of who you are is biology, how much because of the way you were raised?  Can you change either one?  Bring your thoughts, your questions, yourself.  And bring an ID if you want to take advantage of the "Tap" part of the event.  Tantra is located on Hopkins Street, directly across from the little HEB grocery store.

The Whole Building is Now Ours

St. Mark's Episcopal Church has moved to their new location on Ranch Road 12, so the entire building is now dedicated to our use as a campus ministry.  We now breadhave tons of space and lots of things happening.  Look for news about the opening of a lounge where you can simply hang around, drink free coffee (donations accepted), or just have a quiet place to yourself.  And come check out our new window with a design inspired by Christ Chapel and Texas State graduate Dylan Ramey. And THANKS to the Board of Christ Chapel for their hard work and generosity in giving us such a beautiful place to be about Christ's work.
Lonely in a Crowd
It's quite possible to be surrounded by people, but feel alone.  It happens a lot on college campuses, especially one of our size. While the American ideal is of the rugged individual, an island of self-sufficiency, that is not how we are made to live.  From the beginning of Scripture, God saw it wasn't good for a person to dwell alone, so created a partner for the first being.  Throughout the Bible, stories speak of the importance of the relationships we form, be it in tribes or families or nations.  In Christ, the New Testament tells us, the walls that divide us into those groups are no longer relevant.  Whatever our nationality, race, age, sex, or social status, we are brothers and sisters to one another, because we are all children of God and kin to our brother, Jesus.  That doesn't solve the problem of feeling alone, but it does suggest that there are people who will treat you as family, with a warm welcome and with respect and dignity.  Christ Chapel is one such place; it's not the only place at Texas State, but it is a place where we are committed to welcoming the family members we've not yet met and to providing a safe place to be you.  Come join us for a free meal and see it for yourself.

Visually arresting; see it in 3-D if you can.  Just don't expect a plot with a lot of twists, nor any particular depth, nor anything that remotely resembles decent dialogue. If you are a pantheist, you'll find it theologically satisfying.  Otherwise, you might be left wanting some more substance.

Fruitcake
I like the stuff.  That puts me in a minority, because rumor has it that most fruitcakes get regifted year after year, the can never opened.  So let's break this vicious circle by bringing me your fruitcakes.  Cookies, too.

Snuggies
Yep, I got one for Christmas, because nothing says "Happy Birthday, Jesus" better than a fleece blanket so big that it could double as a slipcover.  At the risk of provoking you to covet, I will add that I got the leopard print kind.  That one can reach the remote and still stay under the blanket is so compelling a reason to own one of these that words fail me.

Our campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship.
