I'm Dreaming of a White Elephant Christmas
Wednesday, December 10th, 6:15. What says Christmas better than pizza and presents? We'll eat pizza and then swap gifts - please bring something that ranges anywhere from the desirable to the bizarre, as long as, if you buy it, it doesn't cost more than $5.00. Homemade stuff is great. Feather boas, really cheezy wall plaques, and coupons for Chipotle have all been gifts in the past. |
Bread and Belonging:
Our Wednesday night gatherings continue through December 9th with a free home-cooked supper at 6:15, followed by an informal prayer service. We'll be using the beautiful "Holden Evening Prayer" as the basis of our worship for the evenings. See the article above for word on our last Wednesday night, when we'll celebrate Christmas a little early, but Christ Chapel style. |
Theology on Tap - December 3 at Tantra, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. Theme for 12/3 - "What's A Vocation?"
The above says everything but what it is. We're simply gathering at a place where, well, a variety of beverages are available in order to talk God. Our opening question (but not the only one) will be on vocation; what it is, what yours is, and why it matters. Bring your thoughts, your questions, yourself. And bring an ID if you want to take advantage of the "Tap" part of the event. Tantra is located on Hopkins Street, directly across from the little HEB grocery store. |
Hunger Bowl of Caring
Thanks to all who helped cook, sell, and clean up! We raised through Christ Chapel alone over $300 for the Hays County Food Bank, and the campus ministries together raised well over $1000. Well done! |
Advent: Like Finals, Only a Much Better Ending
If you're not versed in all the weird words we use around the church, "advent" sounds like some kind of air circulation system you would find in an attic. But advent is more grounded than a vent in the roof; it is four weeks of preparation for Christmas, but even more, it is about our waiting and expectation of the promise of God to be fulfilled in the birth of a Savior. And I say "grounded," because God's faithfulness WAS realized that first Christmas night; grounded, because God IS faithful in coming to us in Word, water, wine, and bread; grounded, because God WILL BE faithful in bringing a new heaven and earth to us, even if our waiting and longing seems futile. Advent is in that way something like finals week; the studying seems endless, the degree of concentration like no other time. But Advent is so different in this way - for all the studying we might do, there is no guarantee of the grade for which you may hope. Advent's final result, on the other hand, doesn't depend on our great effort. It is God's effort, and God comes through. God comes through the boundaries between heaven and earth, through the gulf between the holy and profane, through the barriers of time and space, and through our trials and troubles and impatience and longing and sin and madness to be with us. God comes through for you, to be with you, to know you and for you to know God. That's the point of Advent.
Now, if I could just guarantee you a decent grade in every class...

V
I really like this remake, but they've had only four or so episodes, and new ones won't come out until March. Despite the slow production schedule, it will be worth the wait. The important moral lesson this show teaches is not to trust aliens, even if they are drop-dead gorgeous and have impeccable fashion sense. That's simply not a lesson you can get from watching Oprah.
2012
I've just seen clips, but I can tell that even though stuff blows up exceptionally well, it is a dud of a script. And that is no surprise, given the ahistoric, pseudo-scientific nonsense that forms the movie's premise. Do a little reading if you are worried about 2012, and you will see what I mean. You are in much more danger that year from not flossing regularly than from what the end of the Mayan calendar might mean.

| YOUNG ADULT SERVICE CORPS
A little known resource of the Episcopal Church that comes with an enormous impact on those who take part is the Young Adult Service Corps (YASC). Each year a dozen or so young adults are sent out across the globe to partner with dioceses of the Anglican Communion. They spend a year in service and as mission partners in effecting the gospel mandate 'on the ground.'
The first part of applying to the program is open to all who are between the ages of 21-30. The process begins with a four-day discernment weekend held at an Episcopal conference center in Florida. All costs for travel, accommodation and meals are covered (i.e. it's free!) The weekend is about discerning whether YASC is right for you and your right for YASC. There is one discernment weekend held each year and the application deadline is Monday, January 4, 2010.
The dates for the next discernment weekend are Thursday, February 4, 2010 to Sunday, February 7, 2010. If you or someone you know is interested in finding out more about a participating in a life-changing opportunity for a year's commitment come to the discernment weekend. Complete the application below and send it in. There's no risk in applying and there's no penalty for coming to the discernment weekend to find that YASC is not right for you. You will find more information and the application link below.
