A Campus Ministry for ALL Students, Supported by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Sunday and Wednesday Worship: 7:00 p.m., free supper at 6:15 510 N. Guadalupe (across from Tower Garage in St. Mark's Episcopal Church)
What's God's Major?

"What's your major?" is usually the second question asked, right after "What's your name?"  Your major says something about your hopes and dreams, your interests and your talents.  It isn't all there is to know about you, of course, but it is an important piece of your identity.
So what's God's major?  What is it God is studying? Among other things, you.  Yes, God's hopes and dreams and interest is in you, and has been so long before you picked up any book.  I don't know exactly what that will mean for you, but I do hope as you slog through papers and textbooks, you will remember that as well as you may learn a subject and love a subject, God has learned and loved you and always will.  Even the hairs on your head are counted, Jesus says.  That's major love.
College & Young Adult Conference 2009
Camp Capers September 18-20

"Sabbath and Service: From the Garden to the Grave" is the theme for the 2009 Conference for college and young adults to be held at Camp Capers. The Diocesan College Conference is a weekend retreat that begins with dinner on Friday night and ends with Sunday morning Eucharist. College Conference are capersweekends where college students can come together to learn, feel and experience the love of Christ through teachings, activities, discussions and through a caring community. Retreats are typically held in the spring and fall and are located at either Camp Capers or Mustang Island Conference Center. Students are encouraged to bring a friend or come alone. Wherever you are on your journey, in or out of school, working or not, you are welcome to take a weekend and join others just like you. Send me, Pr. Jaime, an e-mail at christchapel@txstate.edu if you'd like to go.  The $25 cost will be subsidized by Christ Chapel by $10, meaning your actual cost will be $15.  That's not much for a great weekend.  If it is still a stretch, let me know.  You can register on-line by clicking the link at the bottom of the page; you will be reimbursed the $10.
Learn to Juggle (and not just your schedule)
jugglingGary Borman and his friend Erin will join us on Wednesday, September 16th at 6:15 for Bread and Belonging, our weekly free supper and worship service.  They will be teaching us how to juggle, and swear we can all learn it in just a few minutes.  Materials will be supplied (soft juggling balls, bowling pins, chainsaws, knives, your choice).  Juggling your schedule is always worthwhile for a great home-cooked meal, prayer and the care and support of some great students and friends.
Theology on Tap - September 11 and 24 at Tantra, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.
The above says everything but what it is.  We're simply gathering at a place where, well, a variety of beverages are available in order to talk God.  Bring your thoughts, your questions, yourself.  And bring an ID if you want to take advantage of the "Tap" part of the event.  Tantra is located on Hopkins Street, directly across from the little HEB grocery store.

MISSION PROJECT GETS A FACE

We are still gathering school supplies for Iglesia Episcopal el Buen Pastor in Piedras Negras, thanks to the leadership of Kevin and Julie Romig.  The materials will be picked up on Sunday, September 13th, following supper and worship.  Here's the fun part:  Steve and Betty Roederer from the Diocese of West Texas will join us that night and tell us more about their mission work with the congregation.  And even more fun:  Kevin and Julie are taking a trip to Piedras Negras on September 19th, and a limited number of students are invited to come along.  For more information about departure and return times, contact Julie at julie_romig@yahoo.com.

Chat with a Chaplain
That guy out on the quad with a sign that says "Chat with a Chaplain: Every Faith, Any Faith, No Faith are All Welcome Here:  A Rebuke-Free Zone" is me, in case we haven't met.  Stop by and say hi.  I am NOT like those loud fellows who show up on the Quad on occasion.  My point is to be available and present for students.  Instead of making you find the church and find my office, I am there for whatever kinds of questions or comments you might have.

America's Got Talent
That Piers guy would hit the reject button on his own mother.  Hasselhoff is a parady of himself.  Sharon Osborn is guaranteed to love any act with kids or animals, no matter how bad.  But in this last phase of the show, the judges don't matter much anymore, only the talent.  I don't know why I find this show so compelling, except that the producers do a good job of giving the story behind the acts.  To know someone's story moves the people on stage from being mere entertainment to real people, and it's much easier to care for real people.  Which is probably why before we go about waging war on folks, or dismissing entire populations as unworthy, or writing off certain groups of people whose ideas or behaviors offend us, we ought to listen to their stories. Weird idea, I know, but maybe sort of Christ-like.
And a few other events:

Daily Readings
A schedule of daily bible readings will be available on September 13th, just in time for Holy Cross Day on September 14th.  This school-year length (September - May) reading program gives a chronological overview of the bible.  If you've ever tried to read the Bible, but got bogged down around Leviticus, this is a great way to add God's Word to your daily life and to get a glimpse of the greatest story ever told.  Copies will be available at the Christ Chapel office.

Bible Study  Weekly bible study begins Monday, September 14th at 6:00.  This hour-long study will look at the Top Ten Important Stories in the Bible.  No experience is necessary.  Join us in the Christ Chapel Lounge downstairs at Christ Chapel.

Late Night Breakfast Bible Study  September 22, 10:30.  Join us for eggs, sausage, pancakes, and orange juice at 10:00 p.m. (at night, in other words).  We'll eat and have a brief Bible Study and be done by 11:15.

God Goes to the Movies
September 30th, 8:00 following Bread and Belonging.  "Boondock Saints" is the film for the night.  We'll watch the movie and then have a brief discussion of where God's story and the human story are interacting, what challenges and what informs our faith.
