| What's the Deal with Prayer?
Another good question. Lots of people pray, but what good does it do? Will God really answer prayer? Why do some go unanswered?
Some pray to change the future; "If I pray, my grandpa will get better." Some pray because they want to be changed: "Lord," they might pray, "help me accept my grandpa's dying." Some pray simply as a way to share their thoughts and cares with a power greater than themselves; some pray out of habit. Some use pre-written prayers, while some prefer spontaneous outpourings. Some seek silence and solitude, while some prefer to pray outloud or in groups.
None are wrong, and whatever method works for you, use it. But there still remains the question: why pray at all?
Every relationship is strengthened by conversation; prayer is at its heart a conversation with God. Listening and speaking (not simply foisting a list of demands on God) is how that relationship grows in depth and maturity. Your true and best friends are those with whom you can share everything, from that for which you are thankful to the worst of your fears and failings, knowing that your real friends will love you anyway. So it is with God, who welcomes our sharing everything. And God already knows the worst in us, and has chosen to love us anyway, so there's no need to hold back.
All this is a longish way to say that prayer is at its heart an invitation from God to be friends, the real and best kind of friends that, if we are blessed, we will find in at least a few more people. The difference; God will never graduate and move away, never lose our address, never forget us, and never tire of calling us friends. Now does that mean God will keep your grandpa from getting sick? Not necessarily, although sometimes prayer seems to work that way. More importantly, prayer is a reminder that even when the worst comes our way, we have a hope and a friend that nothing can take from us. Ever. So happy praying, and remember this campus ministry in your prayers, please.

Things to Look for...
"Servants of the Cross" is a program by which students who wish to make a deeper faith journey can enlist in a three-semester program of study, reflection, and retreats. Those completing the program will join the Servants, an order of students in ministry. Brochures and more information is available at the Christ Chapel office, and look for an annoucement regarding starting times and content in the weeks ahead.
Chipotle is giving away free burritos on Halloween day to anybody with a student ID. Free grub... Yum!
November 18-19 - Do something to tackle hunger. Plans are underway for the Hunger Bowl, a competition and event to raise money for the local food pantry and to establish a fund for students in crisis. Led by the Campus Ministry Alliance, we are pleased to have Marcus Green representing us; he will be contacting others for help.
Reviews:
The Emmys were unwatchable. Besides not having heard of half the shows nominated, the "jokes" were especailly lame and the reality stars awkward, at best. So I watched something else, but I don't remember what.
Asian Garden
The newly opened Chinese restaurant down Guadalupe and across from the post office is not shabby. I didn't actually eat there, but ordered out. The food arrived promptly and was hot and fresh. On the downside, it's a little bit more than most Chinese places, and "spicy" isn't really all that spicy. Next time, I will ask for "really spicy" and let you know. |
Our campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship.

Monday Night Bible Study
No experience is necessary, and no embarassing answers will be required of you. This is just a great way to start your week by tuning into another Word than the words that fill your classtime. We meet on Monday evenings at 6:00 in the Christ Chapel Lounge, in the basement of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. We will be studying the Gospel of Mark for the next few weeks, so come join us. We are through by 7:00, so there is still time for studying all those other books that you've got to read. |
Wednesdays: Bread and Belonging
Wednesday nights are best when spent in a short prayer service at 5:30, followed by a homecooked meal at 6:15 that always includes home-made bread. The prayer services vary: sometimes they are more traditional, sometimes less, sometimes student-led, always inviting you to participate to your own level of comfort, or just to stay silent. Bread and Belonging is a no-experience necessary way to pray, and you are welcome. |
God Goes to the Movies
is where we watch a movie together and ask after God's word and will as it is portrayed (or not) in the film. Our first movie is October 23rd; we'll be seing "Iron Man" on our new flat-screen HDTV with Blue-Ray HD AND surround-sound stereo, courtesy of some generous folks on Christ Chapel's board of directors. Popcorn, soda provided. Yes, I know you've probably seen it, but let's watch it again for where the story's values intersect and collide with God's values for us.

And a few other notes:
Bless My Crib The invitation still stands. Whether it's a dorm room or apartment, it's good to bless it with prayer. Yours truly, Pastor B. will come to your place for an Order of Blessing, which takes about five minutes. Call me at 512-557-8836 or send an e-mail to: christchapel@txstate.edu.
Thanks to so many of you who have stopped by to say hi. Apparently, a sane voice representing the Christian faith is a welcome sight after the interesting visiting "evangelist" of last month.
Radio Spots:
Yes, Christ Chapel will be sponsoring KSTW over the semester. Listen for our ads. Better yet, come join us.
FINALLY, if you have been thinking about coming but just don't know how to cross the door without a friend, you're not the first. Shy people are among our favorite people. Grab a random friend to come with you, or just call me at 557-8836 and I'll arrange for someone to meet you. Don't let shyness get in the way of one of the best places you'll find friends and a reminder of the love of THE Friend I spoke of above.
