Higher Ground News

A Faith Home for You at Texas State

PASSOVER - APRIL 23rd, 5:30 p.m.   Come observe the Passover feast of our Jewish brothers and sisters THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT!  This is not your average Wednesday night meal, but will be a full dinner with roasted lamb, matzo, wine, and other traditional Passover dishes.  Invite a friend!  We would also appreciate knowing if you're coming so we are sure to have enough food; sign up through Facebook or call 353-1928 to reserve a place.
End of School Year News and Events...
Lots of stuff is happening over the next couple of weeks, I know, but I wanted to remind you of some things happening here at Higher Ground that may make your finals week easier.

Look for Dr. Pepper to be on sale for 50 cents per can on the corner of Wood and LBJ or Wood and Guadalupe between 11:00 and 2:00 during Finals Week.  Proceeds support Higher Ground activities.  If you are willing to take a shift on a day or for an hour or so, let me know.

Graduating students will be honored on May 4th at our 7:00 p.m. service.  Steven, Allison, Dylan, and Ranelle are among the grads... Who else?  Let me know.  We'll also be confirming in the Christian faith Tracy Carpenter, and reaffirming the faith of Melissa, Marcus, and Drew.

Coffee Break:  Come by between 10:00 and 6:00 most every day during finals; free coffee is yours.  We're wi-fi wired, too, so you can hang around the Higher Ground lounge to study if you want.

Summer Opportunity
Funds are available to support two summer initiatives involving the urgent and pressing issues of migration on the Arizona/Mexico border, and the rebuilding of New Orleans.  We are willing to partially subsidize (assisting with travel and housing) organized trips for a certain number of ecumenically engaged young adults to work with No More Deaths on the Arizona/Mexico border (potential one week volunteer opportunities exist between July 5th and August 16th), and for the National Council of Churches Work Week in New Orleans, August 17th-23rd.
We are looking for young adults who are committed to the ecumenical notion of growing in relationship and faith with one another (in a small-medium sized group) in an environment of suffering and injustice.  We believe working ecumenically in such an environment brings renewed hope to churches finding common ground in Christian love and mission.  If interested, please respond to
David.Fraccaro@wcc-coe.org by May 16th with your name, denominational affiliation and a brief statement on why this initiative is important to you, and how you would use the experience to grow ecumically, while bringing greater
attention to the issue at hand (ex: sharing the experience with local member churches, blogging on the soon to come WCC-US young adult website)  A small review committee will consider your
request and respond by June 6th.

CHILL OUT ON DEAD DAY

healingApril 29 is a day to study, but you can't study all day long.  Come by Higher Ground at 3:00, 6:00 or 9:00 p.m. for a free ice-cream sundae or Dr. Pepper float.  Come by all three times, if you want.  Actual size of sundae may vary.
Service of Healing and Hope
healing
As you come to the end of the semester, let God's promise of healing and wholeness support you.  A service of healing will be held on 30th as our last "Bread and Belonging" gathering of the semester. Healing services aren't spooky or weird; they are just a time of prayer for the wounds we all bear, especially those of worry and stress as final exams approach.  "Bread and Belonging" begins at 5:30 in the All Saint's Chapel, downstairs in St. Mark's Episcopal.  A free supper will be served at 6:15.
Pastor Lou's Triumphant Return
From Texas to Tierra Del Feugo and Back Again
lou
Pastor Lou Flessner will join us on  Sunday, April 27th to worship with us and then show pictures and describe his six-month odyssey to the southern tip of South America and back.  Don't miss this chance to greet a great pastor and model of what the faithful life looks like.
And Next Fall...

Some things to look for in the Fall of 2008... Wessendorff Retreat; all play, no pain at this glorious ranch and swimming hole, September 19-21...  "Servants of the Cross," an order for students in ministry will be initiated... Revitalized worship life on Sunday evenings... Monthly "God Goes to the Movies," where we watch a movie together and ask after God's word in the film... Exploring our becoming a "One Campaign" congregation... hands-on interaction with the poor and homeless through work with the Netzer Coop, an emerging church movement in San Marcos.. lots more.  I'm learning what it means to do campus ministry, and I thank you for your patience and joy as we learn together.
lgbt logoOur campus mission is to be a welcoming spiritual community, a place for people of any gender, race, national origin, and sexual orientation. Growing together in faith, we seek the unity that Christ envisions for His church through learning, liturgical worship, service, and fellowship.
