Obama Talks About Posse!
|

Posse received an incredible endorsement from presidential
hopeful Barack Obama during an interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education
in November 2007.

Greetings!
We hope your New Year is off to a great start. Posse began 2008 by awarding scholarships to 372 new Scholars - a record for Posse. We are also in the midst of PossePlus Retreat season. This year, we expect to engage close to 2,000 young people around the country in intimate discussions about social responsibility.
As we settle into 2008, we have much in store for Posse Alumni - from the development of the Posse National Alumni Advisory Council (PNAAC) to creating a global Alumni directory. We are busy preparing to launch these exciting initiatives.
We hope that you enjoy this winter edition of the Alumni eNewsletter.
Live well and Posse Love, Kourtney Cockrell Interim Director of Career + Alumni Programs

Boston Alumni Breakfast with Mayor
In August 2007, all Posse Alumni in the Boston area were personally invited to have breakfast with Mayor Thomas Menino. They had intimate
discussions about important issues facing the city, including Boston's
ability to attract and retain diverse, talented professionals. Mayor Menino
was so impressed and inspired by Boston's Alumni that he requested that
the "Posse Alumni Breakfast with the Mayor" become an annual event.
After the breakfast, Mayor Menino told Posse Boston Director Sue
Dalelio that he believes a future mayor of Boston will be a Posse
Scholar. We could not agree more. Sue assured the Mayor that it would
happen long after he retired.
Posse Chicago Alumnus - Jamaal Applewhite
Jamaal Applewhite, Illinois Posse 1 (Chicago), is in his senior year majoring in agricultural engineering. After participating in a co-op with the John Deere Company, his passion for the field was solidified. Jamaal describes one of his greatest accomplishments during his internship, as helping his team to save a little over half a million dollars. Jamaal not only helps to design and manage buildings and equipment, but he also works on constructing the future. Since arriving at University of Illinois, Jamaal has served as a mentor and tutor to youth at the Boys and Girls Club. "The co-op took me away from that this year since I was traveling so much between Champaign and Iowa," says Jamaal. "But once I get into a stable location in Des Moines next year, I want to continue working with young people." This fall, Jamaal received several offers from other firms but ultimately decided to accept John Deere's offer as a product manager in Des Moines, Iowa. Posse wishes Jamaal much success in finishing his degree and in achieving his dreams.
Posse New York Alumnus - Morgan Jones
Morgan A. Jones, Middlebury Posse 2 (New York), works as a radio presenter at Soulfire, a radio program based in Shanghai. When he's not talking about John Coltrane's improvisation skills on Giant Steps, or spending time with his wife Zoe Shan, he tours across China with his hip-hop trio, Redstar. The group is a mix of pure Chinese hip-hop comprised of members who rap in both Chinese and English. Morgan's radio show will go into syndication in the next couple of months. During that time, he hopes to fully develop his show while building the hip-hop scene in China and beyond. Morgan loves his job with Soulfire because "it's nice to talk about Miles Davis' transitions from bebop to cool jazz to rock jazz on the regular in Chinese." You can check out Morgan's show at www.soulfire.cn and his music group at www.myspace.com/redstarhiphop.
