During a presentation given by Dr. Sylvia Earle, whose name is synonymous with ocean conservation, exploration and science, she compared the ocean to the human heart. Then she said, "how much of your own heart would you protect?" The short answer, we need to protect more.

When TED2009 asked Dr. Earle to articulate a wish big enough to help change the world, she said: "I wish you would use all means at your disposal. Films! Expeditions! The web! Morel! To ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas, hope spots large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet." We listened. The authors, photographers, and publishing partners would like to pay tribute to the woman who has stirred millions of people with her passion, knowledge, compassion, and commitment. She continues to show us that The Heart of our Blue Planet beats with force, and this book is our humble contribution toward sharing and making her wish come true.

What's New

OCEANS: THE HEART OF OUR BLUE PLANET

OCEANS: THE HEART OF OUR BLUE PLANET, the 19th volume in the CEMEX Conservation Book Series, helps connect the dots for why human survival on Earth is directly linked to the ocean and offers innovative and creative solutions to those threats by some of the most respected and forward-thinking marine scientists.

As we learn more about our planet’s oceans and their enormous influence on climate, freshwater cycling, food security and human health, we will be better prepared to create policies that protect ocean landscapes and services that are critical to human societies.

Haida Gwaii TIM

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Heritage Site, part of Parks Canada's Pacific Coast Mountains Natural Region, is the definition of beauty. One of many locations that radiate the ecology of Canada's Pacific Northwest.

Island Conservation, in partnership and with support from other groups, has mounted an active eradication program to rid invasive rats from Arichika and the Bischof island chain. iLCP photographer Andrew Wright visited the site to tell this story as part of the Haida Gwaii TIM. Check out Andy Wright's eye witness report.

This fall has been a-buzz with Tripod Expeditions! Stay tuned for imagery and stories!
