" Dear Noah, We could have sworn you said the ark didn't leave until 5pm. Sincerely, The Unicorns" We came across this letter and felt at once, both the hilarity of it but also the weight of loss. Extinction is a word heard so often, that many are numb to the meaning. As photographers and storytellers, we must continue to redefine and reinvent, we must keep subject matter and campaigns fresh, even if these campaigns take months, years or lifetimes. Dr. Piotr Naskrecki (iLCP November 2011 Photographer of the Month), and artist Maya Lin are doing just that. Piotr explores the struggle to save species from extinction from the point of view of a conservation biologist, where having to choose between saving one species over another is a heartbreaking reality. In his latest book Relics: Travels in Nature’s Time Machine, he highlights the species that have survived from eras long past. Maya Lin created a multi-sited memorial focused on What's Missing, an ode to lost species, landscapes and cultures. These unique projects provide the viewer with a new perspective, one that might just transform the viewer into a doer. Join the conversation > |
