In my household every day is Earth Day...or at least we try really hard. The same is true for many of my friends, colleagues and neighbors. I even have friends who have gone completely overboard and only flush the toilet when it is absolutely necessary (you know who you are!) How can we not be hopeful when we can literally see the tide turning?
I know it is easy to get discouraged by the seriousness of the issues we are facing and the scope of the problems we are trying to solve, but I believe that if we all embrace the idea that "every day is Earth Day" we will succeed in the end. As we celebrate the first 100 days of a courageous new administration in the United States that is actually addressing environmental issues for the first time in a long time, we
too must renew our efforts to convey powerful messages that help shed light
in some of the darkest corners of our planet. Now is not the time to relax or to give up. As we approach important conservation gatherings like WILD9, which will once again highlight the imperative of conserving wild nature for the benefit of humanity, and the 15th Conference of the Parties of United Nations Climate Change Conference where important decisions on the future climate protocols will be made, we must work harder than ever to make sure the issues that are important to us are discussed. Most importantly, as hard as it seems, we must maintain our
optimism and positive outlook.
So, have a happy Earth Day!

PHOTOGRAPHER of the MONTH - Jrgen Freund
Every
one of the ILCP photographers has an inspiring conservation story to
share and we want to give them as big an audience as possible. This is
why we will be highlighting the work and commitment of these amazing
photographers throughout the year.
This
month's featured photographer is ILCP Associate Jrgen Freund. Yogi, as his friends know him, was born
in Dortmund, Germany in 1959.
He studied mechanical engineering and found out it wasn't
creative enough for his inventive mind. Instead of designing machines,
he worked as an industrial photographer in Munich for 7 years. Lured
by the challenge of marine wildlife photography, he acquired an
underwater camera even before learning how to scuba-dive in 1981
in the cold lakes of Germany. Finally, he answered "the call
of the sea" and became a full-time international freelance
marine photographer in 1995. He traveled all over the world, taking
acclaimed pictures published in numerous international magazines.
Announcing a new partnership between Jrgen Freund and WWF
Today we are pleased to announce a brand new photographic partnership between Yogi and the World Wildlife Fund. Yogi and his wife Stella have set off in an 18 month WWF Coral Triangle Photo Expedition to document WWF's conservation priorities. The expedition kicked off on April 4 with a stop in Hong Kong to photograph the
shark fin trade and the live reef fish trade. They'll be traveling to the
Philippines. Learn more about the Coral Triangle and keep up with their goings-on by reading their blog which
will show (through Stella's words and Jrgen's pictures) their expedition
as it unfolds. The WWF / Freund Factory Expedition will be investigating the connectivity between the wildlife and peoples of the region, and the threats they face. The
Coral Triangle is the world's centre of marine life - a vast, majestic
and colourful coral nursery covering 6 million km2 of ocean - a home
sheltering and sustaining thousands of whales, dolphins, tuna, reef
fish, rays, sharks and turtles. Its underwater riches are equally matched by the diversity of its people, cultures and traditions - all of whom rely on the sea in one way or
another for their survival. Livelihoods, wildlife and survival are
interdependent across the region and beyond. ILCP is proud to support the WWF / Freund Factory Coral Triangle Photographic Expedition! Check out Jrgen on the ILCP website!
You can also visit Jrgen's website!
Jrgen is represented by Auscape and Nature PL

CONSERVATION PHOTOGRAPHERS IN ACTION
ILCP Associate Jos Benito Ruiz has launched a massive campaign to halt the rampant overdevelopment of the Spanish Coastline. The ILCP is proud to endorse and support this effort. Follow SOS Spanish Coastline and help support this initiative in their blog, twitter and facebook.
The Bering Sea is a wildly productive
ecosystem. As the Earth heats up, the Bering Sea's ice is expected to
melt earlier each year - or even disappear. This could affect fish,
whales, seabirds, fishermen and native communities. Follow along online
from April 4 to May 12 as ILCP Emerging Member Chris Linder posts daily
photo essays about an international science team's study of climate
change impacts on this sensitive ecosystem from the icebreaker Healy. During the expedition he will also be blogging weekly for LiveBooks "Resolve" blog and Scientific American, hosting live talks via satellite phone at science museums, and giving an hour-long webinar through LiveBooks - sign up here!
ILCP Fellow Daniel Beltra was announced as the winner of The Prince's Rainforests Project (PRP) Award
at this year's Sony World Photography Awards Gala ceremony in Cannes,
France on April 16th. He is awarded a fully-funded assignment to document three rainforest regions of the
world. On behalf of The Prince's Rainforests Project and Sony Eco, he
will travel through the rainforest nations over the course of three
months. Read more about it here. Congratulations to Daniel for this wonderful recognition!
 ILCP Fellow Frans Lanting's exhibit
LIFE: A Journey Through Time is currently exhibiting at the Neanderthal Museum in Dusseldorf,
Germany from April 4th until July 4th and in Luxembourg, Germany from
July 1st until September 15th. Frans' lyrical photos
trace Earth's history from the beginnings of primordial life to the
ascent of mammals through otherworldly landscapes and breathtakingly
intimate portraits of animals and plants engaged in million-year-old
rituals.
ILCP Fellow Roy Toft made the cover of this month's Audubon Magazine. His images accompany the story titled "Where Dreams Come True" (by T. Edward Nickens), about one of Hondura's up-and-coming eco-destinations and a birder's paradise. VIEW IMAGES HERE Roy also opened a three month show at the Ordover Gallery in the San Diego Natural History Museum on March 14th (open through June 21), where he gave a lecture during the opening reception. The show is about his up-coming
book titled "Osa....Where the Rainforest Meets the
Sea," which will be out in late 2009. View full details here.
ILCP Fellow Florian Schulz's exhibit Yellowstone to Yukon: Freedom to Roam opened at the Field Museum in Chicago on January 16 and will be there through July 5. It showcases 29 large-scale color photographs of animals in their natural surroundings and shows the need for continuing habitat conservation. The exhibit explains the mission of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) that is dedicated to creating and maintaining a connected landscape where wildlife can migrate, and animals and humans can co-exist. View the press release and visit the Field's website. Also, National Wildlife magazine has published an article on Florian in the April-May issue of their magazine. The article (written by Hannah Schardt) is titled "Making Connections" and is all about the wildlife corridor that connects Yellowstone to the Yukon. View Florian's images and read the entire article here.
ILCP Fellow Christian Ziegler is also featured in the April-May issue of National Wildlife magazine. His images accompany the story titled "Rain Forest Reconnaissance" (by Laura Tangley) - about how scientists are using new animal tracking technology to probe the secret lives of some of the most elusive tropical creatures. View Christian's images and read the entire article here.
ILCP Fellow Amy Gulick and ILCP Executive Director Cristina Mittermeier are featured in the March-April issue of Organic Connections magazine. The article titled "Conservation in Focus" shares their current projects from Madagascar to the Tongass rainforest of Alaska. See page 10 for the story and their images! Cristina held a live chat on April 22nd as part of Sony's Artisans of Imagery forum, discussing How Photography Can Save the Earth. Visit the Artisans of Imagery forum here.
ILCP Fellow Brian Skerry's images are featured in the May issue of National Geographic magazine in a story titled "Ancient Mariner" on leatherback turtles. View images from the article. Brian is also a member of the Ocean Now crew; a project of the National Geographic Society that is being lead by Dr. Enric Sala. National Geographic's Ocean Now is a project to study the last healthy,
undisturbed places in the ocean. You can follow Brian and Enric as they explore the pristine waters of the southern Line
Islands. ILCP Fellow David Doubilet's image from Indonesia appears in National Geographic magazine's Visions of Earth series this month. View image here As part of National Geographic's Live! series, there is still time to buy tickets to see ILCP Fellow Steve Winter this Spring. ILCP Fellows James Balog (The Big Thaw), Joel Sartore (The Great Vanishing) and Flip Nicklin (Blue Whales: Making a Comeback) made presentations earlier this month.
ILCP Fellow Wendy Shattil is featured in an article titled "Wildlife Versus the Wall" in The Denver Post. As part of the team of photographers participating on the Borderlands RAVE, Wendy helped document the barricade's effect on habitats. Read the article here.
ILCP Fellow Art Wolfe has a new stock site with all new images and features, including hi-res downloading and direct online purchasing. He is uploading images and galleries everyday, so please check back often!
ILCP Fellow Jack Dykinga's image of the Rio Grande appears in the Spring 2009 issue of Nature Conservancy on page 22-23. A milestone in Texas - the Conservancy purchased 7,000 acres in November of the Chihuahuan Desert to add to Big Bend Ranch, the largest state park in Texas. Fellow Annie Griffiths Belt's image also appears on page 24, accompanying an interview with the Conservancy's bug guru Frank Lowenstein. Fellow Pete Oxford's images of jaguars are featured in the story "Flora & Fauna - Jaguar" on pages 28-29. New ILCP Associate Bridget Besaw accompanied Captain Bill Blue on a his boat to take a chance on a new way of fishing. Her images accompany the article titled Blue's Ocean on pages 42-51.
We're happy to see some ILCP photographers contribute to the "Resolve" Livebooks blog, which is edited by Miki Johnson, the former editor of American Photo. ILCP Fellow Garth Lenz has started a series on working with NGO's. Read all his posts here. ILCP Fellow Robert Glenn Ketchum shares his experiences working with NGOs and publishers to produce books that create tangible change. Read his posts here.
Also, Garth Lenz's images contributed to a major conservation win in Quebec's boreal region. This win was
spearheaded by the coalition of NGO's for which he created a library of
boreal images in 2005. Garth's images have been the chief visual resource
for their campaign work. He also gave a series of presentations in Europe in Spring 2007 on behalf of these groups in order to build the
international campaign. Read the press release on the Canadian Boreal Initiative.

ILCP Fellows Michele Westmorland and Karen Hunt are pleased
to announce a newly designed website for their Headhunt Revisited project. It is cleaner and easier to
navigate. Bob Gallup did an impressive job in constructing the site! They are also excited about their collaboration to get the documentary film moving to the next level. They have signed an agreement with scriptwriter Elle Russ. Half
the footage has been digitized and all the audio has been transcribed.
The project producers have completed a first rough edit, and now a
narrative outline and script can be developed.
ILCP Emerging Member Ian Shive will be publishing his first major book on August 1st. The 224-page, hardcover coffee table book - will hit store shelves nationwide, titled "The National Parks: Our American Landscape." It is being published by Earth Aware Editions based in San Raphael, California. Our National Parks have long been an inspiration to his photography.
Ian spent the last 4-years photographing on assignment or just
meandering through the woods documenting everything from the arctic
slopes of Mt. McKinley in Alaska to the underwater world of Channel
Islands National Park in his backyard in California. Ian is donating proceeds from the sale of his book to the National Parks Conservation Association. As the date of release nears closer we will keep you in the loop on all the happenings associated with the book. View the press release for more info.

NEW NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SITE - OCEAN NOW
National Geographic's Ocean Now is an exploration, research, and conservation project that aims to find, survey, and help protect the last healthy, undisturbed places in the ocean. By carefully studying how marine ecosystems work without human interference, we can learn how to help healthy reefs thrive, help unhealthy reefs recover, and better preserve the ocean, which covers more than two-thirds of our planet. Its a first effort at building a community around ocean issues.Follow ILCP Affiliate Dr. Enric Sala, ILCP Fellow Brian Skerry and a team of scientists as they explore the pristine waters of the southern Line Islands. The
Ocean Now website features constant updates direct from the expedition
team. On the blog, you can read stories about their discoveries, learn
about the islands and reefs they're visiting, and view photos and
videos straight from the ship. There is also a form for you to submit
questions to be answered by Dr. Sala and his team.
The website lets you track the progress of the expedition, with updated
views in Google Maps and Google Earth using the ship's real-time
coordinates. You'll see exactly where the team is each day, and get 3-D
views of the reefs and islands they visit.
