The distance from sea to shining sea, along the United States-Mexico border is just a little over 2000 miles.  This is the distance that the ILCP Borderlands RAVE team just completed.  A team of 13 photographers from both countries traveled by car, air and foot along the entire length of the border to document the beauty of this landscape and the importance of preserving it for the valuable ecological services it provides.

The issues surrounding the border are complex and serious and we do not pretend to know the solution.  Illegal immigration, drug trafficking and violence are just the tip of the iceberg.  However, the purpose of the RAVE was not to make a commentary on these issues, but to call attention to the importance of observing existing environmental laws as we seek solutions to these problems.

As it stands today, the fence has been designed without taking the needs of wildlife and landscpaes into account and without much thought to the long-term consequences of fragmenting this fragile habitat.

We hope that the RAVE will shed some light on this missunderstood region and that new emphasis will be placed on looking at long-term solutions based on science that aim to build bridges between the two nations and not to destroy valuable ecosystems and ecological processes.

In other news, the ILCP is happy to let you know that Garth Lenz has been nominated to ILCP Fellow status...congratulations Garth!  We'd also like to welcome Trevor Frost as our new RAVE Coordinator.  Welcome to the team!

NEW ILCP HONORARY MEMBER - MICHIO HOSHINO

The ILCP is honored to include Michio Hoshino as its newest Honorary Member.  This is only the fourth photographer to be added to our Honorary membership and he joins the ranks of the ILCP along with luminaries like Galen Rowell and Phillip Hyde.

Michio Hoshino, a gifted photographer native of Japan moved to Alaska permanently in 1978. His 19-year photographic journey included the publication of Grizzly, an award-winning book published in 1986 by Chronicle. He dedicated his life's work to briging attention to important landscapes.  Sadly, on August 6, 1996, at the young age of 44, Hoshino was killed by a brown bear while asleep in his tent in Kamchatka, eastern Russia. Fifteen of his photography and essay collections were published in his lifetime and to this day the photographic community mourns his loss.

It is our hope that through this recognition, his contributions to conservation and photography will never be forgotten.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER of the YEAR COMPETITION 2009 is OPEN for ENTRIES

Once again, the call has gone out for photographers to compete for the very best wildlife images - the competition rewards photographs that are not only technically flawless but creative, innovative and surprising - with preference for pictures taken in wild and free conditions, that faithfully represent nature.

Note that they have changed some of their rules for this year, including being a bit stricter & more specific about other competitions:
"A picture that has won a prize in another competition, which receives more than 500 images, is not eligible for entry. The competition is looking for images which are new and unique and if a picture has been widely seen before it may count against it during the judging process. Once we have notified photographers, that they have a winning or commended photograph, these images must be withdrawn from all other competitions until 31st December 2009, and must not be offered for media publication until 23 October 2009."

Deadline is March 20 (for postal submissions) and March 27 (for online).

LIVEBOOKS BLOG is LIVE

RESOLVE, a collaborative online community that brings together photographers and photo industry professionals of every kind to find ways to keep photography relevant, respected, and profitable, is now live! Visit the main page by clicking BLOG or directly here.

This is an important moment for photography - things are changing fast and there seem to be far more questions than answers. That's why LiveBooks decided to create this online resource for photographers, a place to come together with colleagues, to get inspired by great work, and to learn from the experiences of photo professionals from every corner of the industry and the world.

While giving individual photographers the tips and tools to build creatively fulfilling, economically sustainable businesses, they are also working toward positive RESOLUTIONS to some of the hardest questions facing the photo industry. Of course the forecast sometimes looks gloomy, but photographers and photo industry professionals are some of the most innovative, passionate, and creative individuals. If anyone is going to figure out where the photo industry should go from here, it's photo professionals themselves.

Please take a look at the blog, send it to friends you think it will help, comment on posts you have some thoughts on, and please get in touch with Miki Johnson, Social Media Editor (415.200.0585 or miki@livebooks.com) if you are interested in collaborating with them. Whether you have a question that's been on your mind, or you heard about a cool new photography project, or you have some new images that you'd like to get some feedback and exposure for, or you just want to chat about the state of the industry, Miki is always happy to hear from you.

Some ILCP photographers have already started to work with LiveBooks, such as ILCP Emerging Member Chris Linder.  We've heard that ILCP Fellow Robert Glenn Ketchum and ILCP Associate Garth Lenz have been in touch with them too. Please forward the above links to anyone you think would be interested!
