Happy 2009 to everyone! As the new year rolls out, we are as busy as ever working on a variety of exciting projects that we hope will help us win some conservation battles.
These include a new tome in the CEMEX Conservation Book Series to be published later this year. This new book will deal with the critical role of healthy ecosystems in the well-being of humans and wildlife around the globe. We will launch this book in time to celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010.
Our fantastic new traveling exhibit, "A Climate for Life" opened at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. This exhibit was done with generous support from the Dean Witter Foundation and Conservation International and with the help of some of our partners, including Fine Print Imaging and Art for Conservation in Denver and Minden Pictures in Watsonville, California. The exhibit, which includes 50 stunning prints by members of the ILCP can be seen at the
newly re-opened California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco from now through
April 2009. This month a group of ILCP photographers will be engaged in the organization's fourth RAVE (Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition). They will be traveling from coast to coast along the Mexico/US border, documenting some of the fragile ecosystems shared by the two nations and the effects of the border fence that is being built to prevent illegal immigration. The objective of the Borderlands RAVE is to draw attention to the unique ecosystems and species that live along the border and to call for the strict observance of existing environmental laws as the fence is being built . The RAVE started on January 25 in San Diego and will end on February 17 in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. You can follow their progress on the ILCP's Borderlands RAVE blog.
I am looking forward to working with all of you this coming year to continue helping make our planet a better place for all!

Michael Totten, Conservation International's chief advisor on Climate Change and Cristina Mittermeier, Executive Director of the ILCP opened the new "A Climate for Life" photographic exhibit with a lecture that took place on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, CA.... to a full house! The exhibit includes 40 dramatic prints based on images from the book "A Climate for Life: Meeting the Global Challenge", the latest tome in the CEMEX Conservation Book Series. This exhibit is accompanied by captions written by Conservation International scientists to illustrate the important role of forest conservation in mitigating climate change as well as the effects on people and wildlife we are already seeing around the globe. The exhibit, as well as the book, focus on solutions to address this problem through conservation. You can take a peek at the exhibit here.We thank our sponsor for this exhibit, the Dean Witter Foundation, as well as the partners who made it possible. See images from the opening lecture here.
