INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION PHOTOGRAPHERS Newsletter

August 2008
Dear ILCP Community,

First and foremost, we want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of photographer Tom Vezo. In addition to being a widely published and well recognized photographer, he was nothing short of a conservation hero, having worked tirelessly to preserve the natural landscapes and birds he loved so much.  He will be dearly missed.
On a brighter note, we have exciting news - we have hired Gege Poggi as our new image manager.  She previously worked at CI but will now be the ILCP Image Database manager.  She will also manage licensing, metadata, contracts, etc.  She will be the point person working with you and your agents on ILCP's various projects. Welcome Gege!

We would also like to welcome our newest members:

Affiliate: Renee Harbers, photographer
Partner: The Robert Bateman Get to Know organization.
ILCP Selected as Main Photography Partner for the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona

IUCN Photo Art Wolfe

  Photo (c) Art Wolfe

The ILCP has been selected as the main photography partner for the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona.  Our images will grace the 5 spectacular pavilions that will be the center for the Congress as well as the opening multimedia presentation.  ILCP will only provide images for those NGOs who are our partners and are willing to acknowledge us.  The themes of the Pavilions are SPECIES, OCEANS, FRESHWATER, FUTURES, AND FORESTS. Because we are considered a major sponsor we will be acknowledged in all printed materials and throughout the Congress.  This is the equivalent of what we did in Anchorage with the World Wilderness Congress, but in a scale 50 times larger.
For those who don't know, the IUCN World Conservation Congress is the world's largest and most important conservation event. Held every four years, the Congress aims to improve how we manage our natural environment for human, social and economic development.
The Congress will take place from 5 to 14 October, 2008, in the Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona (CCIB) in Spain. More than 8,000 leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and social organizations will discuss, debate and decide solutions for the world's most pressing environment and development issues.
The Congress starts with the four-day Forum run by IUCN members and partners discussing cutting edge ideas, thinking and practice. The Forum leads into the four-day IUCN Members' Assembly, a unique global environmental parliament of governments and NGOs.
The ILCP, along with partners CEMEX, CI, and WILD, will host the launching of A Climate for Life and will have their own booths.  The Director General of the World Conservation Union, Julia Marton-Lèfevre, and Russell Mittermeier, President of Conservation International, will be the guest speakers at this event.

Michio Hoshino Totem Pole
On Friday, August 8, a totem pole commemorating the vision of Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino will be raised at Halibut Point, in Sitka, Alaska. Michio was killed by a brown bear 12 years ago this month in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula at the age of 43. He touched many lives through his stunning images and gentle manner. The red cedar totem pole was carved by Tlingit master carver Tommy Joseph. It shows Michio's face on the bottom, his hands holding a camera lens, and above him the animals he photographed: caribou, raven, humpback whale, and at the very top, the animal he always wanted to see but never did: a blue (glacier) bear.
