the Wyoming Range. June promises to be just as eventful with planning
for our next RAVE, partnership with Look 3: Festival of the Photograph,
and several other international events. Read on for more information
and to find out what fellow members have been doing over the past month.
Also, please join me in welcoming our newest members.

The Report from Wyoming ILCP Meeting--RAVE Discussion Several dozen ILCP members met in Jackson, Wyoming, on the 17th and 18th of May to discuss ILCP business. We strategized about the concurrent RAVE in the Wyoming Range, shared the status of our book project A Climate for Life, which included a sneak preview of the layout, and considered ideas for future RAVEs. The meat of this gathering was focused on coming up with an organizational approach to RAVE. We split into focus groups and brainstormed about who can propose RAVEs and how to go about it; who will make up our RAVE committee and how they will decide whether the ILCP should pursue an idea and how; and what type of funding and contracts will be necessary for the long-term success of RAVE. We are now working on documents describing the RAVE methodology created in these sessions. During the meeting, several great ideas for future RAVEs were brought up, one of which we are actively pursuing now (see Borderlands RAVE below).
Conservation Photography Workshop Our partnership with Rich Clarkson's Summit workshop provided a great opportunity to connect ideas of conservation with the work of serious photographers in Clarkson's prestigious instructional setting. Students of the workshop also had the chance to participate in our RAVE on the Wyoming Range, and to be a part of the exhibit of RAVE images that will remain up in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson through the summer.
Wyoming RAVE May 19-21 nearly a dozen photographers set out into the Wyoming Range on our RAVE intended to raise awareness about intense oil and gas pressure bearing down on this region. The RAVE drew attention from local and national press, including the Denver Post, Sports Illustrated, and the News Hour on PBS. The RAVE culminated Friday in a public exhibit of 40 photographic prints at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole. The exhibit, sponsored by Earthjustice, will be on display through August. Participating ILCP members included Balan Madhavan, Cristina Mittermeier, Matthias Breiter, Daniel Beltra, Wendy Shattil, Bob Rozinski, Chris Linder, Miguel Angel de la Cueva, Robin Moore and many others. ILCP partnered with Summit Photography Workshops, The Wilderness Society, The Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, Ecoflight, Lighthawk and others on this effort. For more information and to see some of the photos from this RAVE, visit the ILCP website.

Borderlands RAVE
An assault on the borderland wildlife and ecosystems of the United States and Mexico began several years ago when construction of border walls in urban areas pushed illegal immigration to the remote areas of the border. This has already taken a toll on the landscape as vehicular traffic, trash and other habitat degradation have invaded previously isolated landscapes. But in the past year, the US Department of Homeland Security has stepped up its plan to build a wall along 670 miles of this border. Construction has already begun in sensitive ecosystems like the San Pedro River corridor in Arizona, despite federal court injunctions and the clear violation of dozens of environmental laws. Many species, from jaguar, prairie dogs and pronghorn to bees, hummingbirds and butterflies will be affected by this wall. For species like the ocelot, jaguar, bighorn sheep and pronghorn it will likely lead to extirpation in the United States or Mexico. And for many species, as global warming makes northward migration essential for future survival, the wall will eventually block their only path to survival. Our RAVE along the border will take 3 to 4 teams of photographers, with writers and filmmakers, on a journey to document the wildlife and landscapes of this 2000-mile long border. We have begun working with representatives in the US Congress and the Mexican government to coordinate our efforts with pending legislation and other work focused on halting this environmentally disastrous and financially costly, not to mention wholly ineffectual and archaic approach to immigration. NOTE: We are currently looking for funding for this project. If you have any ideas or can help in any way, please contact me (kris_schly@yahoo.com) or Jenny Nichols (jenny@ilcp.com).
