  Join Us in Jackson--May 17-23

In the middle of this month we will meet in Jackson, Wyoming, for a whirlwind week discussing ILCP business, focusing on photographic technique, brainstorming on important conservation issues like global warming, and taking action on preservation of the Wyoming Range. Please join us if you can!

ILCP Meeting--RAVE Discussion
Our ILCP business meeting will focus in part on defining the concept and methodology of RAVE and planning for upcoming RAVE efforts. This will be an important opportunity to shape one of our most cutting edge conservation tools.
In addition, we have invited Michael Totten, senior Climate Change scientist for Conservation International to join us for the week.  Michael is one of the senior authors for our upcoming Cemex book, "A Climate for Life". He will be around all week to discuss ideas and brainstorm with us.  He will also lecture on the evening of May 21st, opposite Jim Balog.

Conservation Photography Workshop
At the end of the ILCP meeting, on May 18, the Conservation at the Summit workshop will begin. This workshop offers the dual opportunity to spread the ILCP ethic and for our members to focus on photographic technique, make important professional connections, and try out some of the latest photo technology, which will be available not only to workshop participants, but also to RAVE participants.
The Summit workshop is available to ILCP photographers for a reduced rate of $1500 for the week.
For more information on the summit, click here.

RAVE
On Monday, May 19, ILCP members and workshop participants will split into photographic teams for a mini RAVE in the Wyoming Range and Upper Green River Valley.  We'll be partnering with The Wilderness Society, Biodiversity Conservation Society and others to get the word out about plans for oil and gas development on this incredible landscape, home to moose, grizzly bear, wolves, lynx and many other species of wildlife. There is currently legislation pending in the US Congress (the 2007 Wyoming Range Legacy Act) that would protect the Wyoming Range from development, but the Forest Service is considering leasing the land before this bill can be acted upon. We hope to shine a spotlight on this area and pressure the Forest Service to withdraw the 44,700 acres of proposed leases.
Additionally, Dancing Star Foundation is sending a camera crew to film a  RAVE documentary. The crew will incorporate this RAVE into a one hour film that will eventually encompass three RAVEs and potentially serve as a pilot for future ongoing RAVE documentaries.

Ethics: Photo Paper
Green photo paper
The onset of the era of digital photography has allowed photographers to use fewer resources and toxic chemicals in the capture and processing of images, but photo printing remains an area where gains need to be made.
To help photographers and exhibitors make the best decisions possible, Dr. Joe Zammit-Lucia, in conjunction with The Nature Conservancy, has created a guide to the impacts of various ty
pes of photo paper. You can download this guide by clicking on the cover, above, or by visiting the ILCP  website where we have included a link on our ethics page.

Affiliate Council's April Gathering

The ILCP Affiliate Council met last month to discuss and define the role of affiliates in the ILCP. This meeting, hosted at The Nature Conservancy's office in Arlington, Virginia, brought to light many ways in which the ILCP can serve as a link between ILCP photographers and conservation organizations.
Affiliates from National Parks Conservation Association, National Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Ocean Conservancy, National Geographic, and Smithsonian discussed the ways in which affiliate members can help the ILCP better achieve conservation goals. A more concise summary of this meeting will be sent out when it is completed.
In order to continue and expand this discussion, the Affiliate Council will be meeting more regularly--we will let you know when and where these meetings are to take place.
