Spirit of the Huaorani Used to Aid Ecuadorian Conservation
|
 |
Pete Oxford and Renee Bish's book depicting the culture of native Ecuadorian tribes has been used as a tool by Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa to lobby for money for preservation of a culturally and biodiverse region of the country. Portions of Yasuni National Park are under intense pressure for oil development, and if development is pursued, several uncontacted tribes and countless species of plant and animals could be devastated. In order to raise money to avoid development of this land, President Correa appealed to OPEC nations in Vienna and to the European Parliament, using Oxford's book to illustrate the need for conservation.

ILCP and Conservation at the Summit |
Jackson Hole Wyoming next month will be the site of an incredible opportunity for inspiration and advancement of our goals. First off, on May 17 and 18 we will hold our business meeting. This gathering will include a discussion of our business plan, goals and objectives for 2009, a first look at "A Climate for Life," which will be at the printer by then, and discussions of our exhibit Irreplaceable with earth justice and RAVE plans and accomplishments. The two-day meeting will be divided into three sections. The first, our Executive Committee Meeting, will take place on the morning of the 17th. The second, a Photographers Business Meeting, will be open to photographers who are members of the ILCP and will happen on the afternoon of the 17th. And finally, on Sunday, May 18, we will hold our ILCP meeting, which is for the ILCP community but also will be open to guests and non-ILCP participants in the Summit workshop. Sunday afternoon will also mark the opening of a very special photography workshop. For 25 years the Summit Workshops have been one of the prime photography workshops in the United States. And this year the Summit will gear it's world renowned staff toward conservation photography in partnership with the ILCP. This is a great opportunity for photographers to hone their photographic skills, try out some of the latest in photographic technology (the newest Nikon equipment will be available for use by participants, as well as processing software, computers and printers), and make connections with magazine editors. The list of staff for this unique conservation photography workshop includes David Alan Harvey, Chris Johns, Frans Lanting, Michael (Nick) Nichols, Jack Dykinga, James Balog, Kathy Moran and many, many more. The Summit workshop is available to ILCP photographers for a reduced rate of $1500 for the week. Spring Creek Ranch has a special rate and block of rooms for ILCP members. (give them a call to make a reservation 1-800-443-6139). And ILCP members can receive a 10 percent discount off of Frontier Airlines flights by using the code 9UPG7E when booking.
Please make reservations soon as the summit and lodging are filling up fast!

Red Desert RAVE at the Summit
|
In conjunction with our meeting and the Conservation Summit, we will be holding a RAVE to raise awareness for areas of the Wyoming Range and Upper Green River Valley that are currently threatened by oil and gas development. Robert Glenn Ketchum will be organizing this ILCP event, which should attract major media attention. Workshop participants can participate in this RAVE, and a selection of the photos will be printed, framed and displayed in the museum that is hosting the Summit workshop.

IRREPLACEABLE begins US Tour in Providence
|

On April 3, Earth Justice opened a unique traveling exhibit drawing attention to the effects of climate change on endangered species. The 40 images that will be projected on the side of a large office building and displayed in a gallery space, are the work of ILCP photographers. The exhibit, titled, Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World. Will travel from Providence, Rhode Island, to Montana, Washington state and California and possibly New York and Washington DC (see current schedule below). One specific goal of the exhibition is to increase public awareness about the American polar bear and in particular new offshore oil leases being granted in the only parts of Alaska and the US where polar bears exist. Many thanks to Mark Lukes at Fine Print Imagine for framing the prints for this exhibit and to Conservation International's scientific team that helped write the captions, which focus not only on the reasons why each species is endangered, but also on what we can do to help. Please go see this exhibit if you get a chance. It will be traveling for a year and will culminate in Washington DC early next year.
The Travel Schedule for Irreplaceable is as follows: 04/03/08 - 04/26/08 Providence, Rhode Island 05/01/08 - 06/01/08 Missoula, Montana 07/01/08 - 08/01/08 Seattle, Washington 09/01/08 - 10/01/08 San Francisco, California For more information, visit the website, which has a Call to Action and the opportunity for anyone to submit their own image to create a giant photo globe.
