1. The International Conservation Caucus annual Gala was a real success. The event took place in Washington DC at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium on Constitution Ave. Attendance was at around 200 people, mostly members of congress and their staff, a few senators and the Presidents of Botswana and Tanzania. The guest speakers were Doug and Kris Tompkins and Tony Blair (via teleconference). This year ILCP's participation was much larger than last year. We prepared a slideshow of all the ILCP photographers for whom we have headshots and images and this slideshow played during the cocktail hour and dinner. The format of the slideshow showed the photographers portrait, name and then a gallery of work. It was very elegant and people loved seeing the faces behind the pictures. 2. As many of you know, American Photo did a beautiful spread in their Green Issue dedicated to ILCP photographers. Now they are creating a website that highlights other ILCP photographers and that hopes to raise money for RAVE. We will be providing them with images by all ILCP members. If any of you would not like to be included, please let us know - jenny@ilcp.com
American Photo is also organizing a fundraising event to take place in early 2008. They have asked for permission to print and auction images by ILCP photographers. Again, all of the funds would go to ILCP and RAVE. I believe this is a great way of raising money and awareness and I would like to ask for your support with this. Jenny will contact the individual photographers whose images would be used in the auction so that you have a chance of declining to participate.
3. Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival- Cristina Mittermeier, Patricio Robles Gil, Florian Schulz, Tom Mangelsen, and Jack Dykinga presented on RAVE - El Triunfo. This panel was mediated by Frans Lanting. Beverly and Derek Joubert had a film in the festival titled, Eye of the Leopard. Jim Balog was also in Jackson and was part of the ILCP gatherings. As always, it was great for this group of Fellows to reconnect and I enjoyed meeting those of you I had not met before.
We also announced Conservation
International's new initiative "Earth in Focus" which focuses mainly on
partnerships with content providers like the ILCP, Wildscreen, Travels
to the Edge etc. to scale the scope of conservation communications.
Through Earth in Focus, CI will be raising money for conservation
communications and this will benefit us greatly.
4. Wild screen / Wild Photos was wonderfully well attended and beneficial to ILCP partnerships and exposure. Ilcp Speakers: Gary Braasch, Tim Laman, Karl Ammann, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Christina Ziegler, Cristina Mittermeier, Frans Lanting, and Peter Cairns
Congratulations to the 2007 award winners: Animals in Their Environment - Paul Nicklen (Canada) with Breath taking Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife - Roy Toft (USA) with The trophy hunter WPOTY 07: *Runner-up, Animals in their Environment - Michael Nichols (USA)-Baboon group portrait *Highly Commended, The Underwater World - Paul Nicklen (Canada)-Leopard seal with Chinstrap penguin
5. This year we have partnered with two organizations to create ILCP promotional calendars. The first one is the WILD Foundation and the second is Conservation International. Both CI and WILD provide valuable services for us in the form of office space, internet, phone, accounting, financial and legal representation, meeting space etc. In the spirit of partnership, it serves everyone to promote the relationship and to maximize our exposure. I am keeping a excel usage sheet for every photographer (use in pamphlets, presentations etc), however if your image has been used in one of these calendars you have been contacted. 6. Congratulations to the Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards Competition 2007:

| Questions for ILCP members
|
ILCP Fellow Carlton Ward Jr. is working on his thesis on Conservation Photography to complete a M.S. in Ecology at the University of Florida. He would love for ILCP members to take the time to answer the following 3 questions to help guide his discussion. Please send answers to carlton@LINC.us
1) What is the difference between Conservation Photography and Nature Photography? 2) Do you see Conservation Photography as a new or emerging field? 3) What are your hopes for the role of Conservation Photography in the coming decades?
