INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION PHOTOGRAPHERS Newsletter
JULY / AUGUST 2007

Dear all:

I want to start with a brief note to apologize for what has been a very long silence.  As you know, I started a new job as Senior Director of Visual Resources at Conservation International and the adjustment to new responsibilities has been greater than I thought.  I am now getting the hang of it, so I should be able to dedicate more time to ILCP.

Being a part of the CI Communications family is not only a great personal experience, but also a great opportunity for ILCP.  I hope that as I move forward in this new job, you too will become closer to CI and its efforts to create a change of attitude and behavior around the planet.

Please note we have changed our phone number:

PARTNERSHIPS
Although we have had partnership with several NGOs, for the first time we
are getting into some partnerships with real teeth.  This month I am happy
to announce three new or enhanced partnerships.

1.  CI has been a supporter of the ILCP from day 1.  Now our partnership has
leaped from a simple sponsorship to a much tighter relationship.  CI is
providing ILCP with free office space in Arlington, VA, access to their
network and other resources and they are hosting ILCP's only full time
employee, Jenny Nichols.  Today we are in the process of producing a book
together and our new exhibit "The Irreplaceable" will be sponsored and
co-produced by CI.  I am proud to say that thanks to CI's amazing
international network of partners and donors, our images and our mission
have now a much greater chance to help catalyze a global conservation ethic
that is firmly planted on solid science.

Through our partnership CI and ILCP are requesting a $25,000 grant from the
Fish and Wildlife Service for another exhibit specific to the major
international funds the FWS supports.  These funds include one for Great
Apes, one for Rhinos, one for sea turtles, one for Asian and African
Elephants and one for Tigers.  There are also funds for Neotropical
migratory birds and Transboundary Species.  This is a matching grant, so CI
and ILCP will provide the equivalent of $25,000 in images, printing,
framing, captioning etc.  The exhibit will be launched at the DC Botanical
Gardens in an event that we hope to co-host with another one of our
partners, the International Conservation Caucus Foundation in the Spring.

The ILCP and CI will be announcing this partnership at the 90 minute
presentation of the El Triunfo RAVE in the Jackson Hole Film Festival this
Oct. 1st.

FYI ILCP members will get a 25% discount to the festival.  Please let me
know if you are planning on attending.

CI will also be announcing their new partnership with Wildscreen and Arkive.
It is very encouraging to me to see that a large NGO like CI is recognizing
and embracing the power of images as one of the most powerful tools for
conservation.

In addition to our partnership with CI, we have also signed an MOU with
Earth Justice.  They want to co-produce a photographic exhibit to highlight
the effects of climate change on the species in the Endangered Species Act.
They are in the process of raising money for this exhibit and we will
contact you soon to request your input on the content of this exhibit.  The
exhibit will be premiered in a congressional event in Washington.  Earth
Justice hopes to use our images to help influence legislation on the
Endangered Species Act appropriations this coming Spring.
NEW ILCP LOGO
logo - smallAt the end of a very long journey that involved working with several designers, we finally arrived at a new logo and branding palette.  Samira Kordestani, a young LA-based designer created a logo that reflects several of the characteristics and values that our "values exercises" have pintpointed as unique to the ILCP.

Here are a few important points about the logo:

1.-  the double circle represents the front of a lens, without being too explicit.  This is a universal tool that binds all photographers.

2. We didn't want to have any of the "clichéd" symbols common to many conservation organizations.  No leafs and no green logos.  Instead, Samira chose to color in green only the letter "c" and the word "conservation".

3. Samira also designed an additional symbol for the ILCP.  The letter "C" enclosed in the double circle initially looks like a copyright symbol, but for us, it also represents the three values that make the ILCP unique:

1)    Excellence in photography
2)    Commitment to Conservation
3)    Ethical Standards

An image identified by this symbol should require no further explanation as to its truthfulness and ethical integrity.

If any of you chooses to use this symbol to replace the conventional "copyright" symbol, we are happy to provide the file.

We are also happy to provide the logo file for those of you who want to use it in your websites, blogs, books, etc.
WE ARE GOING TO JACKSON

Following a very successful presentation in Telluride, the organizers of the Jackson Hole Film Festival have invited the ILCP to make a presentation.  I proposed a presentation on the concept of RAVE, the results of the first RAVE and our partnership with Conservation International for future RAVEs.

We will be doing a 90 minute long presentation on October 1st at what is known as the "Industry Night".  The ILCP will be the "opening act" for the premier of the movie "The Naturalist"; a film about the life of Dr. E.O. Wilson.  The film was narrated by CI board member Harrison Ford, who will be present.  To put a finishing touch on what promises to be a wonderful event, Conservation International will be sponsoring the evening reception.

The ILCP members who will be presenting the RAVE are Patricio Robles Gil, Florian Schulz, Jack Dykinga and Tom Mangelsen.  Kathy Moran from National Geographic and Cristina Mittermeier will moderate the session and the Q & A.

Fabricio Feducci will also present his short documentary on this expedition. National Geographic has also generously created a website on the expedition that we will explore with the audience at this event.

On the morning of October 2nd, there will be a Bio Blitz to engage the larger community in Jackson Hole.  They have invited the ILCP to host a "mini RAVE" alongside the Bioblitz so that people can learn about photography for conservation.

For those of you who want to attend the Film Festival, the organizers are offering ILCP members a 25% discount on registration.

American Photo Green Issue

The 2007 September/October issue of American Photo will be dedicated to the environment and will feature the conservation work of several members of the ILCP.    American Photo has also produced an ILCP photo exhibit entitled "Assignment Earth" that will be shown at the American Museum of Natural History and will host a fundraising event in New York (place and date to be determined) to raise money for RAVE.  We want to thank American Photo and specifically David Schonauer and Kayla Lindquist for all the work they have put in to put this together.  We also want to thanks the corporate and conservation sponsors who so generously contributed, including Nikon, Lowepro, Microsoft and Conservation International. You are all welcome to attend. You are all welcome to attend the launching events for this exhibit, we will send out a notice as to when and where asap.

NANPA annual Meeting

The 2008 ILCP Annual Meeting will take place once again during NANPA.  We are still working out the details for the exact date and location but it will likely be on the day preceding the first day of the Summit.  We will send out details soon.

Several members of the ILCP will be speaking at the Summit, including Nick Nichols, Jim Balog and Robert Glen Ketchum.  In addition, the ILCP will be one of the sponsors of the Outreach Environment Event, which will feature as main speaker Brian Skerry.  There will also be a presentation on the RAVE.  Nick Nichols will act as the MC for this event.

I hope that many of you will come help change the POTY torch from one ILCP member to the next. Jim Balog will be taking over as NANPA's Photographer of the Year from last year's winner, Kevin Schafer.

Also, a break-out panal discussion planned and hosted by the Ethics Committee.  The topic will be, "The Ethics of Subject Welfare: Animals, People and the LAnd." The panelists will be Daniel J. Cox, Susan McElhinney, Michael "Nick" Nichols and Michele Westmorland.

Junior League of Conservation Photographers

Junior League of Conservation Photographers

For several months now we have been discussing the idea of sponsoring and mentoring younger photographers.  Many of you have actually suggested the names of young people who are already working with you.  To formalize this idea, we are launching the Junior League of Conservation Photographers.  For now the only criteria is that the members of the Junior League MUST have a relationship with one of the Fellows.  A talented assistant or a young student are the perfect candidates for this program.  The idea will be to provide opportunities for these young people to interact with the ILCP in meetings, mailings, projects, expeditions etc.  My hope is that we can begin building a list of potential
