Labor reports awarding $16M in training grants in 2011 fiscal year

State Labor Commissioner Harold J. Wirths said the Chris Christie administration expects it will have awarded close to $16 million in customized training and work force literacy grants when the fiscal year ends June 30.

The department said the grants have trained more than 38,000 workers at more than 460 businesses.

The businesses matched the state grants with $20.8 million, with much of the employers' investments represented by the wages paid to the employees during the training.

"Creating jobs and retaining jobs is fundamental to New Jersey's economic vitality," Wirths said.  "Customized training grants benefit employers by making their businesses more competitive and these grants assist workers by upgrading their skills to maintain pace with industry developments or to advance their careers."
JVS Client Ohm Laboratories showed benefit from LWD grant.

JVS Corporate Training wrote a customized grant  on behalf of Ohm Labs and provided the training.

Ohm reported that the most notable result was derived from the compliance training. 130 staff members who deal with Quality attended cGMP and Quality training customized to Ohm's unique requirements.  "As a direct result of the excellent training, we passed our 2010 regulatory inspections by the FDA, the European Union and the DEA," Ohm's HR Manager stated.

Other courses that had a significant impact were soft skills training, including Management Skills for Supervisors, and Leadership courses.  First line leaders became more effective in delegating, communicating and building a successful team.

The hourly staff indicated that the training they received positively impacted their workflow and the quality of their work.  It enabled them to be more engaged in the work process, communicate more effectively and improve their overall job performance.

"As a direct result of improved performance, we were able to create many new jobs during the grant period, increasing our staff from 450 employees to 531.  We would like to thank the NJLWD and JVS Corporate Training for this excellent grant opportunity," she added.
