As this edition of the JVS at Work e-newsletter goes to press, many in our community are facing harsh financial realities.  Despite early signs of what we all hoped would be a broad based economic rebound, we are now in the midst of what is being called a jobless recovery, with unemployment still hovering close to 10 percent.  The demand for JVS job placement assistance from the "middle income unemployed" of our community has continued unabated throughout the economic crisis, with nearly 300 individuals on our caseload at the present time; unfortunately, we anticipate that this demand will continue well into 2011 and beyond, with labor economists predicting "elevated unemployment" for as long as the next eight or nine years.

It has been the mission of JVS for more than 70 years to provide job placement assistance to the unemployed and help our friends and neighbors regain their independence and dignity, whether they are middle income job seekers, people with disabilities, émigrés or the aging.  Please take a moment to think about those among us who are suffering because of unemployment and its inevitable consequences.  Think about their spouses and their children.  Think about what a new job would mean for these families.  And think about what you can do to help.

I invite you to visit our newly updated website at www.jvsnj.org to learn more about JVS and the services we provide;  use the DONATE NOW button to make a tax deductible contribution to aid us in our work.  Your gift will enable JVS to continue its mission of "helping people help themselves" by providing education, training, employment, and health and human services assistance on a nonsectarian basis to the nearly 18,000 people age 14-100+ we serve each year.

As we celebrate the Jewish High Holidays, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the JVS Board of Trustees and our entire staff to wish those of you who are members of the Jewish community a healthy, happy and a sweet New Year.

Thank you, as always, for your continuing friendship and support.

caregiverCAREGIVING COMPANIONS LEND A HELPING HAND TO SANDWICH GENERATION

JVS Caregiving Companions provide caring, bonded, non-medical assistance and companionship to older adults who wish to remain in their own homes for the maximum time possible.  The following Thank You letter, received by Program Manager, Rachel Cohen, illustrates the significant impact the program can have on an individual and their family.

I just wanted to thank you and the JVS team for all your help with my mother over the past year.  As a long distance caregiver, JVS has been invaluable in helping me care for, and monitor, how my mom is doing in an ongoing way.  As you know, my mother's strong wish is to stay in the family home and like so many others, she is proud and does not willingly accept help.  Your team's flexibility and sensitivity to her needs and feelings have made it possible for her to increasingly use the care of JVS services and ultimately stay in her home.

I also really appreciate your responsiveness to the family.  Whenever there has been a concern, the team has promptly responded to my concerns and worked with me to find solutions.

Your caring team and their hard work has made it possible for the family to support my mother in staying in her home during this last stage of her life.  The family's thanks to you for this is immeasurable.

Sincerely,
LS, Silver Spring, MD

 THE "HIDDEN" JOB MARKET

PC logo
JVS is the sole recipient of a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) to help expand the number of job openings listed on the LWD website and make them available to job seekers throughout the State.  This initiative is based on the successful model created by JVS  in its work with MetroWest synagogues to identify openings in the "hidden job market" through job-a-thons (phone-a-thons for jobs). JVS will replicate this model on a nonsectarian basis by training staff and volunteers at faith and community-based organizations  throughout NJ.  The first job-a-thon held by a West Essex/Morris faith-based organization, representing 12  churches and synagogues, netted over 50 "hidden jobs" that were uncovered by a group of 40 volunteers.
