"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." -Old English proverb
Meaning you can offer something to someone, like good advice, but you cannot make them take it. Boy, have I been learning this lesson a lot lately!
If you are a parent, you know that kids will do what they want, regardless of your best intentions. Homework is a big production in our household. Not only do my kids get homework from their regular school, but they get some from Hebrew school. My oldest is going through his Bar Mitzvah training so he has even more to do. As a mom, I can schedule specific times to do homework, clear the table, keep the house quiet, offer support, even sit down with my kids to encourage them to focus. However, I can not give them the desire to learn or put the information into their heads or on their papers.
As a business owner, it is my job to find the right product or service to support my clients. I can give all kinds of ideas and advice, but at the end of the day, the choice of what to do belongs to my clients. It may not be what I think is right, but I am learning that is ok.
Sometimes it is frustrating when I see my "horses" so thirsty and I have a huge trough of water just for them, but they won't drink it! That is when I need to step back, stop pushing them towards my trough and let them find the way to quench their own thirst. It's a lot easier than pushing a stubborn horse!
When you butt up against a wall with a client, how do you overcome it?
