Dear Parents,
As we say a very fond (and sad) farewell to a wonderful Temple family, we are glad to welcome back another wonderful family. Brian Marcus and Victor Gonzalez came to our Temple from Las Vegas three years ago. They met with me and told me about their three terrific kids, Blake, Gilbert and Gabby. Little did I know that this family would become my surrogate family here in San Diego. Dinners were shared, games were played, dogs were watched and stories were told. I found myself at the Marcus/Gonzalez house more times than at my own. My dog thought she lived there with their two tale waggers, Kisses and Bonda. When Brian got the opportunity to take a temporary job in Japan, we all thought it would be quite the challenge. Even though Brian had just accepted the job of Torah/Hebrew School president and Board Member of the Temple itself, sushi and yens were drawing him further away from us. I should have known that the people he worked for over there would not want to let him go. They made him an offer he couldn't refuse and now the family is packing up to move to the land of the rising sun. I am practicing up on my Japanese in anticipation of a visit sometime in the future!
I am so thrilled though that the Siperstein family, Steve, Anna, Zackary and Gabby have decided to come back to our Temple. Even though they moved up North, they missed us (and we certainly missed them). So, let's hope for light traffic as they travel down the 5 corrider to attend school and services. Whether coming or going, our families are what make us the place that we are. Thank you all for the time that you spend here, now and in the future.
L'Shalom, Cathy

Dear Preschool Parents, Thank you to all my returning parents. We have some new faces and I'm looking forward to seeing you all again this month. We'll be learning about Thanksgiving and making hand turkeys! Shanah Tovah, Ms. Rachael K, Lori Bunshaft The Kindergarten Torah School Class Rocks! We are in full swing for the New Year. Our year class has been so busy in the month of October with holiday learning and projects from handprint apples, paper plate shofars to strawberry basket succahs and flags for Simcha Torah. To add to the learning excitement, our class participated in the first family education by making challah and learning about the tradition of the Shabbat Basket. In addition, we all smiled for our Consecration Photos and attended the Consecration Service where Rabbi Lawson called the kindergarten students to the bima for blessings and the special mini Torahs. Then we all danced, waved flags and then sat quietly as Rabbi Lawson surrounded us in the Torah and live characters from the Torah appeared before our eyes.
A huge "thank you" to all our wonderful parents for attending Family education, Succot Services, Family Service and Simcha Torah/Consecration. It means a lot to your child's Jewish education when you take the time to be interested in their religious education. -Ms. Lori

Hello First Grade Torah School Families, We celebrated FIVE students with perfect attendance so far this grading period! We've collected 5 boxes of gently used items to donate and well over $30 in tzedakah! Your kids are great and love to learn and participate. Ryan and I look forward to class every Sunday. If you aren't receiving our weekly recap, please send me an email so I can add you to our list. Shanah Tovah! Ms. Rachael and Ryan Family Education, Grades K & 1 with Cathy: 2nd, Shelley Sloan Shalom to second grade!
We start the month with the holiday Sukkot, why we build a Sukkah and the mitzvah to visit in the Sukkah. The students made decorations to hang in the Sukkah. We also studied about the different things we do in a house of prayer, the Siddur and the many prayers in Hebrew and in English, the Shemah that is in the Mezuzah, the story about Rabbi Hillel and his love to study Torah.
It was a great activity/ learning how to make a Mezuzah. Please come and just say shalom. I love to hear from you! Until next time, stay well! L'hitraout,
Shelley

Over the past month, we have been studying the different holidays.
These holidays were Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah. After completing the holidays, we began learning about the first Torah portion of Bereshit (In the beginning). We learned about what G-d had created each day as well as a song which helped them learn the first line in the Torah. After learning about this portion, we did an art project that represents all the days of creation and what was created each day. The students were very excited about this project and they really understand the story. Each week we are going to learn about that week's Torah portion and do an activity to go along with it. I am putting an emphasis on having the children do good deeds throughout the week and then share it each Sunday. I sent home a flier with "Mitzvah Smile" on it. Please encourage your children to do good deeds throughout the week and bring the papers filled out back to class. I will send out another copy soon. I enjoy teaching your children each Sunday. They are a great group of kids. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to speak to me.
B'Shalom, Lindsay

The 4th grade class has had a great time this month of October. We have celebrated four holidays; Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We decorated our rooms with colorful chains, we made Shabbat place mats, and we're practicing our news radio show that will be presented to the parents at the end of the month. The kids are listening well and seem to be very active and hungry for Jewish knowledge. We have a lot of fun things planned every month and I'm excited to see what November has to offer.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Polis (Zimmerman)

After a lot of fun with holiday lessons through all four fall holidays, we finally get to begin learning about Israel using our textbooks as an excellent guide and utilizing other resources to supplement. Artzeinu, An Israel Encounter, is a wonderful textbook by Torah Aura Publications with rich history as well as geographic and cultural components. It even includes a section in each chapter on some of the problems in our homeland. Over the year, we will progress with a very well-rounded study.
Last week the class began in Tel Aviv and will continue through the month with the important history of statehood through the Declaration of Establishment. Also, we'll take a trip through time and visit our 39 collective grandmothers. Students may be asking some questions about their grandparents origins and immigration experiences, so be prepared!

Tzedakah Corner Last year the Temple Emanu El Torah-Hebrew School gave a $3000 gift to the Jewish Federation of San Diego in support of Torahs for Our Troops. We at the school decided that this would be a wonderful use of our Tzedakah monies. The Jacobs Family of San Diego are matching our gift on a 1:2 basis, making this even more meaningful. It is an honor to be able to help our Jewish military service men and women with the gift of a Torah. Thank you all for contributing to this worthwhile mitzvah! |
