"Networking works if you work the follow-up!

I figured out my business tagline, "Because Connections Matter," after attending Kathleen Ronald's workshop "The Fortune is in the Follow Up" at the 2009 Promotional Products Expo.  I'd worked with Kathleen for a year sending out her newsletters, but hadn't seen her in her element before, and was awed by her energy.   

 

While sitting in her class, I had an "Ah Ha" moment.   At the time I was struggling in my business and spreading myself thin trying to market 3 separate businesses.  I was attending lots of in-person networking events but feeling like a failure because I couldn't successfully tell others what I did, nor did I feel confident following up afterward.  During the class, Kathleen asked us to take out a dollar bill and tear it up.  Some did and some didn't.  The moral of that exercise was, if you don't follow-up you are throwing your money away!  Not just the untold dollars that could come from the connection, but also the money you invest in getting to and attending the networking event.  If you don't follow-up, why bother going at all?

 

I had lunch with Kathleen and during our one-on-one time I hatched a new plan. I kept my 3 businesses but narrowed my core concept down to...helping others connect to their clients!  Now if I do networking, I have my elevator speech down and know I GET to do the follow-up!

 

I also use my talents to help my clients follow-up; with Constant Contact, Send Out Cards, Promotional Products, and virtual assistant support, there isn't a reason not to stay connected.  Some fun follow-up ideas... 

  • send an email
  • send a card
  • make a phone call
  • schedule a meeting   
  • friend or follow on social media  
  • add them to your newsletter 
Tip: When meeting someone you want to connect with, tell the person you enjoyed meeting them and ask what the best method to follow-up would be!
