Dear Parents,
Can you believe it's May?? I say this every year - "where did the time go?" This year though, I missed so much of the activities here at Torah/Hebrew School. I would like to talk about a couple of exciting events this month here at school.
We started off our month on Sunday, May 1st with a commemoration ceremony for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Rose Schindler, grandmother of 3 of our Torah/Hebrew School students, and a survivor herself, spoke to our 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th graders. We began our program at 10a.m. with Rose speaking to us about her experiences in the Holocaust and then lit 6 yahrzeit candles in memory of the lost 6 million (this included over 1.5 million children). Afterwards, the students had an opportunity to cement their ceramic butterflies (made last year at our Tzedakah Fair) to the courtyard wall.
The next important event involving our school is our last Family Shabbat of the year. This will be our Teacher Appreciation night. No matter what grade your child is in, please make the time to come and honor our wonderful teachers here at Temple Emanu-El. While Star Laddon made sure that everything was under control while I was out on sick leave, each of our teachers pulled together to make sure that your children had the best Torah/Hebrew School experience possible. I am so grateful for them all. Please join me in properly thanking them on Friday evening, May 13th at 7p.m. There will be a fabulous Puppet Show, Israeli Dancing and a delicious Oneg Shabbat.
"Don't forget to RSVP for the Heel Kickin' Hoedown - Temple Emanu-El's annual auction fundraiser. It is Saturday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m. and you can RSVP here or by calling the Temple office at (619) 286-2555. I would like us to donate a gift basket from each class for this event. The monies raised will go to benefit the Torah/Hebrew School. If you would like to help fill our baskets, here is the list of what is needed: Kindergarten and 1st grade together will be a basket filled with Arts & Crafts. Second grade will be games/puzzles, etc. Third and Fourth grade will be personal items, grooming, toiletries, spa products etc. Fifth grade is all sports items and Sixth and Seventh together will be anything food related (this can be wine, oven mitts, dried pasta, gift certificates to restaurants, etc.
I know there is not much time to fill these baskets, but if everyone would bring in one small item for their class, we can get these put together and raffled off at the Hoedown! Please bring the items to my office anytime, or at pick up and drop off during school hours.
Thank you for all of your help with everything you have done during the year.
L'Shalom,
Cathy

Alef, Betty Erez Bet, Judy Goren Gimel, Freida Grossman Dalet, Shelley Sloan P & B, Elana Hamovitch PSSM, Rachael Davila Yom Ha'atzmaut may be a few weeks away, but not in Rm C. To celebrate Israel's birthday, we'll be decorating a State of Israel and making our end of year Art projects. See you soon! Ms. Rachael K/1, Lori Bunshaft Wow! The Torah School Year has just flown by so quickly. I hope all families had a very Happy Passover. Our Torah School Seder was loads of learning fun. We had a surprise visit from a costumed Pharroh and Moses. Of course no seder is complete without the interactive jumping frogs. A special thanks to all the parents and children who sent in seder foods and arrived early to assist with set up. Some of the kinderarten children were in full volunteer mode preparing the seder tables. I hope your home seder was made special by the addition of your child's Torah School art project of the colorful seder plate and kiddush cup. I am looking forward to more learning in the month of May and I hope to see you at our schoolwide of the year art and dance festival. ~~Miss Lori 1st, Jessica Daniels 2nd, Shelley Sloan 3rd, Lindsay Spector

5th, Barbara BirenbaumDear 5th Grade Parents, As today is Yom HaShoah, commemoration day for the victims of the Holocaust, we were blessed to hear our classmate Jonny Schindler's Grandmother, Rose Schindler, and her survival story. As usual, the students had a number of significant questions so our discussion afterwards was rich. I hope you continue it at home. I will still accept any print outs from the last news letter, which would be marked up with discussion evidence about the terrorism in Israel and the most recent bombs and increase of missle fire from Gaza. Important reminders: Students have checked out a book from the Temple's library (if yours did not, please do so asap, or from another library) to read something with Jewish content, fiction or non-fiction, at their reading level. I've assigned a book report of any type or length or creativity DUE MAY 22. On that day, the 22nd, we will be completing our end of year art project, so students will want to be in class for the whole session, if possible. Family Education
May 15: Grade 7 |
Tzedakah Corner This past month the Temple Emanu El Torah-Hebrew School gave a $3000 gift to the Jewish Federation of San Diego in support of Torahs for Our Troops.
We at the school decided that this would be a wonderful use of our Tzedakah monies. The Jacobs Family of San Diego are matching our gift on a 1:2 basis, making this even more meaningful.
It is an honor to be able to help our Jewish military service men and women with the gift of a Torah.
Thank you all for contributing to this worthwhile mitzvah!
