Greetings!

When I was a child, my mom would pull her hair out whenever my sister and I would make her late.  Late for her was on-time;  on-time was early.  I didn't know then, that behavior was a standard.

As a business owner having and maintaining standards is very important.  It shows current and potential clients how to treat you.  Do you have standards for your business?

Warmly,

Honoring Commitments

Since my son is starting the training program for his Bar Mitzvah; I've been going back in time to my Bat Mitzvah.  The memory that stands out the most is not the months of preparation or how cute the DJ was, it was all my friends who had RSVP'd that they would come and never showed up.  I remember how hurt I was and how it taught me the lesson to push the hurt aside and focus on the friends who did show up.  Friends still do this and while the hurt it causes hasn't lessened, I know how to recognize the signs of repeat offenders.

In my business, these signs are red flags. The last thing I want is a client who does this, so I have questions on my exploratory assessment that address these tendencies.  I look for clients who honor my time by setting appointments, arriving on time, having all her materials, or acknowledging my time by giving me plenty of notice if she is not able to meet or have what she needs to have.

I had a potential client who emailed about a project she wanted to discuss and she said she'd call between a two hour period after my office hours (like the phone company).  She ended up emailing me after the time to say she was going to call the next day.  I wondered if she was that way with me, a vendor, how was she with her clients?

Like my mom, it is my standard to set firm appointment times and arrive within 5 minutes on either side of the set time or to make every effort to communicate when I am not able to honor the commitment.  I also try to make sure not to make commitments that I can't or don't want to honor.  I expect the same courtesy!

What standards do you have about Honoring Commitments?
