Dear Parents,
We are all feeling like we are in the swing of things here at Torah/Hebrew School. We have had two Family Education programs already. Jessica Daniels taught the 5th grade about Tzedakah projects and the class made blankets for the children at Children's Hospital. They also made get well cards and placemats for the seniors at Jacob Health Center. We will be delivering them along with potpourri sachets that they made for the San Diego Center for the Blind. Thanks to all of you that came out and shared in this experience with your children.
We also just had our first Torah/Hebrew School Movie Night. This was held on Saturday evening, Oct. 16th. The movie was How to Train your Dragon and it was enjoyed by everyone that was there. The cost was only $5 per family and popcorn, apple cider, lemonade and coffee were served. Watch for details about our next Movie Night.
Please join us for a wonderful experience on Friday, November 19th at 7p.m. SHABBAT UNPLUGGED is back again by popular demand. This time, we are offering a family Shabbat dinner before services.
Come and join us for this beautiful evening. Dinner (reservations needed in advance) is $10 for adults, $5 for children 3 - 10 and free for 2 and under. There will be blessings at the tables, wine/juice, challah and a delicious dinner by Mr. Chicks. Myrna will be there with her guitar and the Rabbi with his wisdom. Don't miss out on this chance to eat and pray and sing together. Download PDF
A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families! L'Shalom, Cathy

It was so wonderful to see my returning students. I can't believe how much they've changed over the months apart. Most of the kids are now old enough for me to step up my activities. You'll see less coloring and sticker projects and more hands-on activities. For Thanksgiving we'll be making Apple Turkeys. The kids will be using their fine motor skills and imaginations. Make sure to set your clocks correctly so you don't miss this fun class! K/1, Lori Bunshaft
Kindergarten Torah School is cool. We have been very busy learning our Torah School routines and making new friends. Our first Family education project taught us all about the Shabbat Basket Project. All kindergarteners are eager to be able to bring the basket home on a rotating schedule.
We are also busy learning the Hebrew alphabet and simple words in a fun and motivating way. Our projects have included learning about the fall Jewish holidays, Shabbat and the story of Noah's Ark. Looking ahead to November includes a mitzah project for the San Diego center for the Blind and of course, learning about Hanukah with a fun Menorah project. 1st, Jessica Daniels
Hello Families! I am very excited for November! We ended October with a wonderful 5th grade Family Education centered around tzedakah, staging our own Tzedakah Fair for the class, following a very successful Kindergarten/1st grade Family Education involving Shabbat at the start of the month.
While Family Education will not commence during November, this will provide me the opportunity to focus on my amazing 1st grade and Hebrew students. After learning about the Creation tale and Adam and Eve, I look forward to introducing more Torah stories and related art projects to the students.
Finally, Kindergarten through 2nd grade families, I hope you are enjoying the Hebrew letters that your students have been bringing home! Ask your child the name and sounds the letters make; your students will know! November will hold more Hebrew letters as well. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me! It is a joy to not only work with your students, but to get to know the families that are behind such wonderful, bright minds during Family Education. Always, Jessica 2nd, Shelley Sloan 3rd, Lindsay Spector 4th, Leslie Friedman
We have been working on the 10 Commandments. Our study has been focused on the why and how we received the Commandments. Now, we will work on learning what the Commandments teach us. Then, the students will be creating their own 10 Commandments.
 5th, Barbara Birenbaum
Our class is so active and engaged each week; I continue to be very impressed with this group of students. It is truly a joy to come to work with them.
Remember, each week's homework (rewarded with a sticker) is simply to discuss our class' lessons (or any Israel related conversation) with your child and make a brief but descriptive record in the notebook or otherwise.
Last month we traced our 39 Jewish Grandmothers all through history and connected with their experiences all over the region. Groups formed quickly and students worked cooperatively discussing, deciding and sharing out. It was a pleasure to behold. We also began our journey of study through Israel in Tel Aviv and next we go to the Dead Sea region. Extra credit: have a Dead Sea mud facial and report to the class about the health enhancing results.(kidding)
Thank you to all who joined our rich family education session last week with Jessica Daniels on the subject of tzedakah. We enjoyed preparing a number of projects for donation. Everyone had fun and now we are trying to extend the experience by inviting families to participate in the act of delivering the donated items to the various organizations. PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL OR A NOTE TO CLASS IF YOUR FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DELIVERING PROCESS.
Details will be organized based on the number of families responding.

Shalom 7th grade Torah School Parents!
First, my thanks to All of you who bring your children every Sunday morning-our attendance has been awesome.
Here's a little summary of what we/they have done. Our first session we went over defining Holocaust vs. holocaust. Also, we defined Genocide and Antisemitism. We finished with an art project- our own "Chagall Window".
Session two- a lesson on Propaganda, some stories-The Poison Mushroom and other "children's" stories. We also saw the opening 24 minutes of the DVD The Nazis- A Warning from History.
Our 3rd session, Charles Colona, took over. Your kids saw a short movie The Wave. A true story, that dramatizes how easily one can be swayed.
Our fourth week, some reading then answering questions about what they read- hey, it is school! We watched another 20 minutes plus of The Nazis DVD- and the kids got a little lesson about Kristalnacht.
Our fifth week, we viewed our first movie: The Devil's Arithmetic. If your child missed the movie-please ask me. We have it here at Temple!
Our last session, the sixth one- Your kids received their books. I hope you get a chance to peruse the books too. This is an excellent account of a very difficult subject that your children and I, are trying to study and if possible understand.
