According to Dictionary.com, the philosophical meaning of the word Freedom means " the power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without; autonomy; self-determination."
All humans have free will. Not all can act on it, and men and women have been fighting for centuries for the right of freedom. During the month of July, we celebrate our nation's victory as our Independence Day. Today we use the term, freedom, in all kinds of contexts not foreseen in 1776. These days, Americans are free to choose a religion, where they live, where they work and how they vote. As a business owner, freedom is having the flexibility to be my own boss, choose my own clients and make my own work hours. I can take my laptop to the coffee shop rather than be tied to an office to get my work done. My kids would say freedom is a whole summer of no school and lots of playtime. However we define freedom, let us remember with gratitude those who died so that we may live free. And so celebrate this month! How do you define freedom? |
