Greetings!

On Sunday, May 2nd, our Torah School
celebrated Yom Ha' Atzmaut. Even though it was officially two weeks
earlier, our school couldn't fit it in until the 2nd. The
weather totally cooperated with us and we were able to be outside all morning
with cool lovely temperatures.
Once again, taking advantage of our Temple's actual Jerusalem
stone, we wrote prayers/notes to put in the cracks of "The Wall".
Everyone got to make their own necklace with a wooden Hamsa (hand) for
decoration. It was wonderful seeing all of the kids wearing theirs at the
end of the morning.
The sand art station was very popular with the
children doing their own designs using sand (to represent the desert in Israel). New this year was a pen-pal station. I now have many letters to send to
the children in Shar HaNegev. Hopefully, we will get responses back from
their school.
As alw ays, the most popular area was the food section. The
classes each made their own Israeli salad, chopping tomatoes, cucumbers,
onions, peppers and mixing them with oil and lemon juice. There was
plenty of pita bread to be stuffed with the Israeli salad, falafel, pickles,
olives, lettuce, hummos and tahina - YUM! Nobody minded decorating their
own sugar cookie with blue and white icing (the colors of the Israeli
flag). Myrna, as always, brought so much joy to our celebration with her
singing. We ended the beautiful morning with everyone waving their flags
and singing the Israeli national anthem, Hatikva. Happy 62nd
birthday Israel! L'Shalom, Cathy P.S. Make sure to register for the 2010-2011 school during school hours on Sunday, May 16th and May 23rd!

The third grade

We just finished reading about Joseph and his brothers and as the year
rounds out, we will be reading about Moses and watching The Prince of Egypt!
5th Grade, Barbara Birenbaum
The
Fifth Graders are so fabulous, it is a pleasure teaching and spending Sunday
mornings with this group ! Thank you for sending them each week, our attendance
is wonderful. For
the last two weeks, we have immersed ourselves in the geography and importance
of numerous locations in all regions of Israel. In cooperative groups, (and oh
so very polite and productive !) they read (from our textbook and a few
other sources ) and discussed each of the regions of Israel: Coastal, Northern,
Southern, and Jerusalem (so special all by itself). Each group then
contributed a site or city or two to a regional map with a key feature or main
idea and a symbol for each location. Rotating the maps among the groups, each
group contributed to each poster for a truly cooperative experience, not to
scale but definitely cohesive and really cute. For
our final project, each student will create their own 3 dimensional,
multi-medium topographical map of Israel with important sites and symbols.
These will be on display at our last day of school art fair and then the
students will take their masterpiece home for your family's permanent
enjoyment. B'Shalom, Barbara
Birenbaum
6th Grade, Susan Laddon
Hello Parents! This past month we have tackled
a good many interesting topics. We read and participated in some activities
surrounding the Destruction of the Beit Hamikdash. From there,
we moved on in our history books to Chapter 5, which is
generating some lively discussions about Judaism and Christianity. On
April 25, we participated in Family Education, I was very interested in hearing
all the genealogical stories from several students and their
parents/grandparents, the photo albums and artifacts (such as published books)
were all fantastic. In the remaining sessions (only 4! I can't believe
it!) I plan on finishing up our discussion of Chapter 5, and hope to get all
the way to the larger diaspora of Jews to Europe. 7th Grade, Danny Bailund
To all our 7th grade parents,
First my gratitude to You, who thoughtfully brought your
children to Torah School all of these Sundays. I have been very happy
not teaching to very many empty seats! We are winding the year down now, our Holocaust studies are
through. Your children do have a
wonderful resource in the book given to them at the beginning of our studies, please encourage them to
read or re-read from time to time! (The stories and lessons are timeless) We've had a great
year! I hope your children come to our EASY events! We have a Youth Friday Evening Service May 14th- Please Come! June 13th one week
after Torah School- EASY goes to Knott's Soak City More information to follow Shalom, Danny Bailund
