Give Yourself Permission to Save and to Keep

I have often taught that "Clutter is a result of delayed decisions." For example, take a close look at the stacks of paper on your kitchen counter or the email sitting in your Inbox.  Every piece of paper and every email is a decision waiting to be made.

As you look around your office, do you have excess papers, files, reports, and binders sitting around? Are your filing cabinets bursting?  It's time to reacquaint yourself with your company's retention policy. Many companies have different retention guidelines for different segments of their business. Reviewing and familiarizing yourself with these policies will give you permission to either hang on or let go of something.

In a recent training session, an employee admitted to the group that she had binders with budget reports in them that were more than five years old. They were simply collecting dust and taking up precious space on a book shelf in her office.

Another participant admitted that she had an old IBM Selectric typewriter that was nearly 30 years old sitting in her office; it hadn't been used since the late 80's.  Her reason for hanging on to it? She didn't know where or how to get rid of it. Luckily, someone spoke up and said that the maintenance department would be able to take it off her hands and recycle it.

What can you let go of today? Drop me an email at Audrey@OrganizedAudrey.com. I'd love to hear of your progress. And I promise not to tell.
