United Way Hosts 8th Annual Golf Classic
Golf enthusiasts from across the CSRA teed-off for charity in the 8th Annual United Way Golf Classic, a tournament to benefit United Way of the CSRA. The tournament was held on Monday, April 27, 2009, at Belle Meade Country Club in Thomson, Georgia.
Twenty teams played in this year's tournament, and proceeds from the event will serve as first dollars for United Way's 2009 Campaign. Milton Ruben Toyota donated a Toyota Prius for a lucky hole-in-one winner, and the tournament featured a silent auction and raffle. The day ended with dinner sponsored by The Knox Foundation as well as presentation of the "Windsor Cup" sponsored by Windsor Jewelers. READ MORE.

Community Volunteers Lend A Helping Hand
On Friday, April 24, 2009, over 150 volunteers from local companies converged on 12 local non-profit, health and human service agencies to lend a much-needed hand. United Way of the CSRA's ninth annual day-of-caring, Project Serve, kicked-off at 7:00 a.m. with a hearty breakfast at First Presbyterian Church. The industrious and high-spirited volunteers then proceeded to designated agencies where their projects had already been coordinated.
This year's event was sponsored by Akima, CSRA Business Lending and Hands On Georgia. Volunteers from AmeriCorps VISTA, Atlanta Gas Light Company, Augusta Service Company/Austin, First Citizens Bank, Palmetto GBA, Procter & Gamble Manufacturing Company, Security Federal Bank, and The Savannah River Site Team spent the day working in 12 United Way partner agencies performing projects ranging from painting and landscaping to playground installation. Born Learning Program Reaches Rural Pre-School Children
The Change Happens Foundation has awarded United Way of the CSRA with a project grant to provide outreach services to low-income families with preschool children in rural areas served by the organization.
By age 4, children who live below the poverty line in our community are 18 months behind what is normal for their age groups; by age 10 that gap is still present. For children living in the poorest families, the gap is even larger. By the time children from middle income families with well-educated parents are in 3rd grade, they know about 12,000 words. Third grade children from low-income and homeless families with under-educated parents have a vocabulary of about 4,000 words, one-third as many words as middle income peers. READ MORE. |

United Way expects that a total of 300 at-risk, homeless and special needs youth will be served. This program will help United Way strengthen nonprofit capacity to provide quality services that mobilize the community to create lasting changes as well as have a positive impact on youth adopting healthy lifestyles. Now Recruiting Loaned Professionals
For many years, United Way of the CSRA has shared a special alliance with employers in the Central Savannah River Area who have participated in the Loaned Professional Program. United Way relies on its corporate partners to lend their best and brightest employees to help assist our staff in the development and implementation of annual workplace campaigns.
Serving as a Loaned Professional (LP) allows United Way to maximize volunteer efforts and minimize fundraising expenses. LPs increase awareness of the many critical community needs while generating civic leaders for United Way and its community partners.
Benefits include:
· Heightened company visibility while strengthening external relations with organizations in the community. · Unique professional growth opportunities for high-potential employees. · Opportunity to impact the quality of life in the community where your company conducts business. · Exemplify your company as a compassionate corporate leader, enhancing your corporate image.
There are two ways to help:
· Allow an employee to participate August 17, 2009 - November 6, 2009. · Provide sponsorship dollars to allow United Way to hire an employee.

Help United Way
Although the school year has come to a close, August will soon be upon us, and the thought of starting a new year of curriculum will quickly be on the minds of parents and students alike. But for many youth in the CSRA, the basic school supply list is incredibly difficult to afford. In Columbia County alone, there are approximately 140 homeless students and about 5,000 who are on free or reduced lunch, which translates to poverty level.
To help decrease this need, United Way of the CSRA will be combining forces with Wal-Mart stores in the CSRA and Burke County along with the Richmond, Columbia and Burke County Boards of Education and the community to help "Stuff the Bus."
Mark your calendar for the area-wide school supply drive on August 1 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at local Wal-Mart SuperCenters. The public is invited to come out, donate school supplies, and literally help stuff the big, yellow school bus that will be on site. Supply lists will be available the day of the event, and while shopping, keep in mind that this particular day falls on the TAX-FREE holiday!
For additional information regarding Stuff the Bus, please contact Meghann Barnes at 706-724-5544 or mbarnes@uwcsra.org.

Funded Program Spotlight: Community Cupboard at St. Stephens Ministry of Augusta
Margo was homeless when she first arrived on the doorsteps of St. Stephen's Ministry. Her health was very much compromised, and she lacked proper nutrition, which made things even worse. Years of neglect had taken its toll on her body and her health, which resulted in several hospitalizations and a period of rehabilitation where she learned to walk again.
After several months of being incapacitated, Margo has now returned to St. Stephen's Ministry where she volunteers at their Community Cupboard. She says that the encouragement, support and help she has received has changed her life. Having St. Stephen's Ministry and the Community Cupboard as a resource has not only fed her body but her soul as well.
United Way funding enables St. Stephen's Ministry to offer the Community Cupboard which provides food and toiletries to individuals and families of individuals who suffer from HIV/AIDS.

Born Learning Tip
Nuts and Bolts of Fatherhood: How Dads Make a Difference
Let's face it, not all Dads are good with a hammer and a nail. But a Dad doesn't need to know his way around a hardware store to be handy at home. Dads have an important set of parenting tools, and when they use them well, they can help children build important life skills of their own. Listen. Right from birth, a child communicates. The more you listen, the more a child will tell you,and you will learn what's important to them. Play. Play time is not only plain fun, it encourages children to be active and creative. Be patient. Children learn from watching. Show your child how to solve problems and face challenges. These are important skills for life. Spend time. Time is the most important tool fathers have for building solid relationships. Use it well.
Clearly, fatherhood is a long-term project. But when Dads roll up their sleeves and jump in - spend time ...read stories...offer encouragement...lend an ear - they can help children learn to stand steady on their own two feet. For more ideas, go to www.bornlearning.org. |
