United Way Launches New Movement Called "LIVE UNITED"

Jeff Spears, United Way's 2008 Board Chair,Jeff Spears 2 introduced a new movement at the Kickoff on August 25.  It's called LIVE UNITED, and it's about advancing the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in the CSRA.  The premise is that everyone deserves opportunities to have a good life.  A good life consists of a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.  That's why United Way is going to be focusing our work on the building blocks for a good life: Education, Income and Health.

AmeriCorps VISTA Program Provides Positive Impact for the Community

On July 21, United Way completed year one of its VISTA community program.  We are pleased to report that significant first steps have been made towards our goal of building the capacity of current nonprofits to better serve their community.

In 12 host agencies, VISTAs (Volunteers In Service to America) impacted our community and leveraged resources that:

 1. Engaged over 1,317 volunteers (349 of which were Baby Boomers) in more than 7,927 hours of community service.
2. Raised over $142,145 of cash resources (grants, donations and fundraising) and over $82,196 non-cash resources (in-kind goods and services) to support community nonprofits.
3. Distributed over 77,850 nonprofit promotional materials that helped build community knowledge and awareness.
4. Brought $132,729 back into the community by marketing and coordinating volunteers who prepared 142 tax returns.
5. Identified 16 new partnerships that will strengthen the delivery of quality services.

United Way's Continuation Grant for year two has been approved, and our on-site audit has been completed with no findings.  Project UNITE has been increased from 13 VISTAs to 15 VISTAs for year two with an additional $25,474 being brought into the community for nonprofit capacity-building efforts.

Funded Program Spotlight -

Speech and Hearing Services at The
Speech and Hearing Center

Jesse, a bright 7 year old boy, was diagnosed with Central Audiotory Processing as well as ADHD.  He was referred to The Speech and Hearing Center where he was evaluated and therapy was recommended.  However, his mother declined the therapy because she had no insurance on her children and could not afford to pay for the therapy.  Fortunately, through further evaluation, it was determined that the family qualified for United Way funding.

Jesse immediately was enrolled in the therapy program and has been receiving therapy for about six months now.  Through a series of testing, the Speech Therapist determined specialized needs and was able to develop a program for Jesse which included Sensory Tactics, Earobics and Music therapy (which Jesse never would have been able to get through the school system.)

Thanks to a United Way-funded program, Jesse is not only communicating much better but his grades have improved significantly!
Your donations make it possible for agencies like The Speech and Hearing Center to help families find the services they need to turn their lives around.  For more info regarding The Speech and Hearing Center Click Here.

Born Learning Tip

You can use a trip to buy groceries to help your child build learning skills.  With a baby, talk about the things you're seeing.  Ask your toddler about the shapes and colors he sees.

Give your preschooler the food ad for something you're buying and ask him/her to match the picture with the item in the store. For more ideas, go to  www.bornlearning.org.
