United Way Hosts First Leaders Summit!

On May 29, 2008, The Honorable Deke Copenhaver, Mayor CopenhaverMayor of Augusta, kicked-off the first annual Leaders Summit at the Doubletree Hotel Augusta where nearly 100 of Augusta's top business leaders gathered to network and celebrate the success of the 2007 United Way campaign. The event, sponsored by Georgia Power and CB&H Business Services, LLC, was an opportunity to thank area companies for their past support and continued involvement with United Way and our community.

Mark Maund, Principal with CB&H Business Services, LLC and United Way's 2007 Campaign Chair, thanked everyone for the impact they have made in the community.  Walt Dukes, 2008 United Way Campaign Chair and Region Vice President of Georgia Power, shared that he is looking forward to an exciting campaign.  "It takes all of us working together to create a bright future.  We can make an impact through our commitment, enthusiasm and leadership. United Way and its partners get results that no one can accomplish alone."  Jeff Spears, President of Savannah River Banking Company and United Way's 2008 Board Chair, presided over the event.

Pacesetters Set the Pace

For the first time in several years, United Way is asking companies to become Pacesetters in this year's campaign.  Pacesetters are organizations that conduct successful United Way campaigns early in the year to "set the pace" for upcoming campaigns.  To participate, organizations agree to meet specific Pacesetter criteria and report their campaign results by August 8, 2008.  Pacesetters demonstrate extraordinary community leadership by participating, and they are eligible for additional recognition.

Special thanks to our first 2008 United Way Pacesetter Campaign, MAU, Inc.

Please consider joining United Way as a "Pacesetter." For more information, please contact Rina Powell at rpowell@uwcsra.org or 706-724-5544.

Save the Date!

Please join us in August for the 2008 United Way Employee Campaign Manager (ECM) training.  Training dates are as follows:

August 5, 2008 -  8:00 a.m.  (Location to be determined.)
August 14, 2008 - 12:00 p.m.
(Location to be determined.)

As an ECM, you are a critical partner in United Way's mission to improve lives and strengthen the communities in the CSRA. You are the eyes, ears and the voice of the community in your workplace. We know that as an ECM, taking on the responsibility for your organization's fundraising campaign is a lot of work in addition to the job you do each day.  That's why we are here to support you with everything you may need to help make your organizations campaign a success.

You are a champion for progress in our community, and without you we simply could not reach the numbers of people needed to create real and lasting change. We are grateful for your time and commitment.

Please keep an eye out for more information or contact Dee Dee Kurilla at dkurilla@uwcsra.org or 706-724-5544.

Loaned Professional Program Benefits All

For many years United Way of the CSRA has shared a special partnership with area employers that support the United Way Loaned Professional Program.  The purpose of the Loaned Professional is to assist United Way staff in the annual fundraising campaign. Employees are sponsored or 'on loan' from August 18, 2008 until November 7, 2008.

This program has a threefold benefit:
· Portrays your company as a compassionate corporate leader to thousands of people in over 700 companies who are strong members of our community.
· Enables the designated professional to build their leadership, negotiation and presentation skills.
· Assist in generating millions of dollars to meet the growing needs of the CSRA.

By providing an associate or sponsorship, your company will be viewed by others as a significant leader in our community, one that clearly demonstrates the importance of local corporate responsibility.

For more information on the Loaned Professional Program, please contact Rina Powell at rpowell@uwcsra.org or 706-724-5544.

New Designation Policy

Last year, United Way revised our Designation Policy to read:

United Way of the CSRA does not encourage designations; however, we will process designations to 501(c) (3) health and human service nonprofit agencies as a service to our donors. Designations must be $150 or greater in order to be processed. Each designation under $150 will be directed to the Community Investment Fund.

The Community Investment Fund is the heart of  United Way of the CSRA.  It is the fund through which contributions are invested in local human service programs based on community needs.  The Community Investment Fund increases the donor's ability to make a difference by combining their gift with thousands of others to support a common community agenda.

Together, through United Way, we can make an impact that none of us can accomplish alone. With your support, we can make a difference in the community where we live.

Caring ClubŪ Participating Merchant Highlight -
California Dreaming
California Dreaming Logo

From the piled-high salads to mouth-watering entrees, it is easy to see why so many Augustans frequent California Dreaming.  Located at 3241 Washington Road, the restaurant proudly boasts a menu full of variety, staff who are committed to outstanding service, and a relaxing atmosphere for its diners.

It is no surprise then, how excited United Way was to see California Dreaming join the list of Caring ClubŪ Participating Merchants in 2006.  One of the original merchants of the program, the restaurant continues to offer a complimentary basket of honey-butter croissants to any Caring ClubŪ member.

Kerry Leach, Marketing Manager, CentraArchy Restaurant Management Company, says,"California Dreaming is proud to be involved as a participating member of the Caring ClubŪ, rewarding those who give so generously to this most deserving organization."

Agency Highlight -

Family Counseling Center of the CSRA, Inc.
Reanne, a wife and mother of two, demonstrated very little emotional range, was able to leave her home only rarely, and was completely dependent on her husband for everything.  She suffered with Schizoaffective Disorder which rendered her unable to drive or disagree or say no to any person.  Struggling to stay present in reality, she had only one friend.

Today, through the help and support of the The Family Counseling Center, Reanne has made great strides in therapy, and her life has been completely turned around for the better. She actively participates in the Women's Self Esteem Support Group, has made friends in the group, and is personable, compassionate, and funny.  She advocates for her needs to be met with her husband, and she can now verbalize to other people what she likes and does not like.  Recently, she learned to drive a car and obtained her drivers license.  Today, Reanne independently attends her healthcare appointments, goes grocery shopping alone, attends church where she sings in the choir, and she proudly drives other friends to their appointments.

Through the services made possible through your United Way contributions, Reanne now has a new life and a brighter future for herself and her family.
