A New Year of Promise! |
I hope you're as excited by the promise of a new year as I am!
Winter is the season for applications and submissions for juried art shows, exhibit proposals, art fairs, and artist in residence programs. So these last couple of weeks have been a time to really map out my strategy for 2008. I've already applied to one artist in residence program, entered four juried art shows, and submitted applications to ten outdoor art fairs.
And that's only the beginning. I'll been sending in many more applications and proposals in the weeks ahead. I'll be certain to share good news with you as it comes my way, and hope to see some of you at my shows in 2008. |

Beauty Worth Preserving |
I hope you've noticed the tag line for Great Lakes Editions: "Beauty Worth Preserving." That phrase hints at many nuances of my business philosophy. For example, I print my photographs with pigment inks on pure cotton paper so that you can be sure your purchase will last as long as a fine water color painting.
But that phrase is meant to suggest much more. It also expresses my desire to preserve the subject and inspiration for those photographs for future generations. The next two items tell of a couple of ways I'm working to help preserve the beauty of the Great Lakes. |

Supporting Nonprofits |
|
I donate 10% of every purchase to nonprofits working to preserve the beauty of the Great Lakes region. I recently tallied up my sales for 2007 and sent checks to the following four nonprofits:
I just launched Great Lakes Editions in the sping of 2007, so my support for these nonprofits was modest this year. But a quote from Arthur Ash has become a mantra for me. "Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can."

To do my part to help inform others about the issues facing the Great Lakes, I write the environmental blog www.greatlakesforall.com. Each week I seek out stories about the Great Lakes environment to share with my readers. Though there are plenty of stories about the challenges facing the Great Lakes, I try to report on the many successes as well. Here's a sampling of recent posts:
If you share my interest in preserving the beauty of the Great Lakes for future generations, and would like to stay informed about the challenges and successes, please consider subscribing to either the RSS feed or email edition of Great Lakes For All.

A Kind Testimonial |
|
Recently I received this kind note from Lyndelle Chiomenti.
Hello Steve,
I grew up on the shores of Ottawa Beach. One day two weeks ago, I was so homesick for it that I went searching the Internet for pictures of Big Red. That's when I found your photograph of the lighthouse in winter with the dark sky and the sun just breaking out with a ray shining down. I just ordered that photo today. I'm looking forward to hanging it in my office here in Washington, D.C. right near my computer so I can see it all the time...
Thanks so much for making it possible for me to go home, even while sitting in my office here in the District.
Sincerely,
Lyndelle Brower Chiomenti
I really appreciated Lyndelle's kindness. It means a lot to know that my work affected her in this way. As a further kindness, Lyndelle has allowed me to share this with you and others on a page of testimonials I hope to add to my website soon.
Have any of my photographs made a special impression on you? I'd consider it a great kindness if you shared your thoughts with me--and gave me permission to share them with others as well. Just sent me a note at stevehuyho@greatlakeseditions.com. |
