| Under the Thumb's Spell |
Michigan's Thumb region is a magical mix of farms and beaches. In a single eyeful, you can take in a gorgeous barn or field--and see Lake Huron.
Last month we explored the area with our kids...and wondered why it took us this long to visit.
You still have time to plan a late summer or autumn trip. Point Aux Barques Lighthouse, between Port Austin and Port Hope, is 150 years old. The attached keepers home is now a museum. It's in Lighthouse County Park, a wonderful place to camp, picnic, play bocce ball, or fish.
If it's warm enough to swim when you're in the Thumb, then check out the sandy beach at Port Crescent State Park. It's also a fine park to hike or canoe lazy Pinnebog River.
Fall brings apple picking, fresh cider, corn mazes, and harvest festivals. Meanwhile, you'll find nautical antiques and Depression glass in Bay City and Harbor Beach. Get details from Huron County Visitors Bureau. |

Saving Saugatuck's Dunes |
If you've visited Saugatuck Dunes State Park to hike the wooded dunes, loll on the long beach, or swim, then you know what a special place it is.
When I was a student at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, this gorgeous retreat was the site of an active sand mine. But forward thinking conservationists preserved it for future generations.
Conservationists have long eyed a relatively untouched tract of land just south of Saugutuck Dunes State Park. With over a mile of beach on both sides of the Saugatuck channel, the privately held Dennison tract is an ecological gem many hoped to protect. Unfortunately, conservationists were outbid when the land was put up for sale, and it is now slated for development.

Art Paper Your Great-Grands Will Admire |
Your fine art print is made with the best materials and processes available. I print all my photos on natural cotton paper with long lasting pigment inks. You can be assured that every print you purchase is a true heirloom.
I recently adopted Crane Museo as my new standard fine art paper. In a recent post on my blog Beauty Worth Preserving, I effused about the specifications of this lovely, all natural, cotton paper. I love the luxurious velina finish and beautiful eggshell color. And the prints are the best I've ever produced. |
